Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The ECHL announced today that Gwinnett Gladiators forward Brad Schell was named the In Glas Co ECHL Player of the Week for December 1-7.
Schell scored 4 goals and 3 assists in four games, as the Gladiators picked up 7 out of 8 points during the week with a 3-0-1 record.
He scored two power play goals in a 9-2 victory at the Mississippi Sea Wolves on Dec. 6th, helping the team set a new team record for goals scored. Schell tallied 1 goal and 2 assists in a 4-3 shootout loss the previous night, also against Mississippi. Schell also had a goal and an assist for the Gladiators in a 3-2 win over South Carolina on Tuesday night.
The announcement marks the second time Schell has been named Player of the Week in his career, the first coming the week of January 23-29, 2006. He also won Player of the Month for January, 2007. Schell was also named the ECHL MVP for the 2006-07 season as he finished with 110 points while with Gwinnett.
The forward becomes the first ever repeat winner in Gladiators history, as seven other players have won it once.
The Gladiators return to action Wednesday, December 10th at 8:05 at Mississippi. The team returns home for a Friday matchup with the Sea Wolves at 7:35.
Began in 1988-89 with five teams playing in four states, the Premier 'AA' Hockey League has grown into a coast-to-coast league that will have 23 teams in 16 states and British Columbia playing 864 games from Oct. 17, 2008 to Apr. 4, 2009. Eighteen of the 23 teams have played at least five years in their current city.
The third-longest tenured professional hockey league behind only the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League, the ECHL averaged 4,174 per game last season, marking the fourth year in row and the 16th time in the last 18 years that the league has averaged over 4,000 fans. The league has drawn over four million fans each of the last five years and 11 times in the past 12 seasons.
