Charlotte Checkers News Release

Cincinnati, OH - The Charlotte Checkers faced their first challenge from the North Division this season in the defending Kelly Cup Champion Cincinnati Cyclones and won a resounding 4-1 road game.

During the first period, the game was stopped due to a fire alarm that forced fans to exit the building. The situation was controlled and fans piled back into the building to see the road team score the first two goals of the contest. First, it was Checkers forward Peter Tsimikalis blasting a shot between the legs of Cyclones goalie Kyle Gajewski at 12:17. Later, it was Checkers rookie David Rutherford registering a goal as he rifled a slap shot over the glove of Gajewski at 15:33 putting up the Checkers 2-0 after one period.

During the second period, the Cyclones finally got on the board when Ben Gordon scored on a two-on-one break as he beat Checkers goalie Maxime Daigneault at 10:59 slashing the Checkers lead in half, 2-1. Charlotte wouldn't take long to retrieve their two goal lead after Matthew Ford scored during a goal mouth scramble at 12:12 putting his team up 3-1.

In the third stanza, Checkers forward Mike Taylor scored the lone goal at 8:13 of the period when he shoveled in a loose puck behind Gajewski. The Checkers wouldn't surrender another goal and they skated away with a 4-1 road victory.
