(SAVANNAH, Ga. )Savannah pitchers walked eight batters, but the Sand Gnats held on for a 4-3 win over the Lexington Legends Monday night in the opener of a three-game series. With Rome's 3-2 win over Greenville, the Legends now trail the Braves by three and one-half games in the South Atlantic League Southern Division.

The Sand Gnats took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Leadoff hitter Matt Reynolds drew a walk and moved to second on a single by Gilbert Gomez. Cam Maron hit into a double play as Reynolds moved to third, and with Dustin Lawley at the plate, Lexington starter Chris Devenski was called for a balk, which allowed Reynolds to score.

The script was similar in the bottom of the third. Brandon Brown led off with a double and moved to third when Reynolds flied to right. With Gomez at the plate, another balk was called, and Brown scored to give Savannah a 2-0 lead. Gomez then singled, stole second, went to third on an infield hit by Maron and scored on a sacrifice fly by Lawley.

The Legends broke through with a run in the fifth inning. Jobduan Morales led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Justin Gominsky walked, and Jordan Scott sacrificed the runners to second and third. Chan Jong Moon followed with a single up the middle to score Morales.

Savannah extended its lead to 4-1 with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Brown singled and stole second. Reynolds and Gomez walked to load the bases, and after Maron struck out, Lawley's second sacrifice fly of the game brought Brown home from third.

The score remained 4-1 until the top of the ninth. Savannah reliever Chasen Bradford issued consecutive walks to Brandon Meredith, Jay Austin and Morales. Ruben Sosa ran for Morales, and T. J.

Chism relieved Bradford. Chism walked Gominsky to force in a run, and Jordan Kreke, pinch-hitting for Jordan Scott, grounded out to second to score Austin from third, leaving the score at 4-3 with runners at second and third and one out. But Chism retired Moon on a called third strike, and Nolan Fontana flied to right field to end the game.

Savannah starter Michael Fulmer (7-5) worked the first five innings and got the win. Devenski (1-1 with Lexington, 7-6 overall) took the loss.

The two teams meet again Tuesday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
