Hickory Crawdads News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns topped the Hickory Crawdads, 5-1, before 1,363 fans at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown on Monday night.
The Suns (27-22, 69-49) charged in front with three runs in the bottom of the second inning against RHP Jerad Eickhoff (L, 11-7). With two on and two down, SS Bryce Ortega sliced a two-run triple inside the right-field line, plating both runners for the 2-0 advantage. 3B Matt Skole followed with an RBI single through the left side of the infield, stretching the lead to 3-0.
Eickhoff tossed a scoreless third inning, before RHP Paul Schwendel kept the Crawdads within striking distance with three scoreless middle relief frames.
Hagerstown RHP Taylor Jordan (W, 1-2) countered with five scoreless innings, before the 'Dads (27-23, 63-56) got on the board against RHP Greg Holt in the top of the seventh. With one away, C Kellin Deglan lined a solo home run over the right-field wall, cutting the Crawdads deficit down to 3-1.
The Suns, though, tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth against RHP Daniel Lopez. After 1B Justin Miller was hit by a pitch to start the stanza, DH Brett Newsome singled Miller to third base and took second himself on the throw to third. RF J.R. Higley then skied an RBI sacrifice fly to center field, bringing in Miller. Newsome moved to third base on a ground out, and then sprinted home on a wild pitch from Lopez, making it 5-1.
Deglan delivered a one-out double in the top of the ninth, but RHP Colin Bates navigated through the frame in scoreless fashion, closing the 5-1 win for the Suns.
