ASHEVILLE, NC - Jordan Ribera rocketed a walk-off, RBI double into left field in the tenth inning to give the Asheville Tourists a 4-3 win over the Charleston RiverDogs in South Atlantic League action on Monday night at McCormick Field.
Charleston now has a record of 61-55 (22-27 in the second half) on the season after their series' opening defeat. Asheville moves to 74-46 (27-23 in the second half) with the win.
Ribera's double came off reliever Nick Goody (1-2), who had just entered the game to start the tenth inning. Samuel Mende walked to start the frame and scored all the way from first on the play. Kenneth Roberts (4-1), who threw a scoreless and hitless ninth and tenth, was credited with his fourth win.
The RiverDogs took the game's first lead in the second off starter Chris Jensen. After two singles and a walk loaded the bases, Ali Castillo waited out another walk to force in a run. Cito Culver (1-3, 2 RBI) then dunked a two-run single into center and Charleston went up 3-0. Culver's single extended his consecutive on-base streak to 28 games and his road hit streak to 13 games. Jensen found his rhythm after that second inning and he combined with relievers William Rankin, Nelson Gonzalez and Roberts to render the RiverDogs hitless the rest of the way. That gave the Tourists the chance to come back.
Asheville got on the board in the fourth when Trevor Story scored on a wild pitch. In the seventh, still trailing by two, Jared Simon and David Kandilas each singled to put the tying runs on base. Ryan Casteel (3-3, 2 RBI) followed by cracking a double into right, scoring both runners to tie the game at three.
The RiverDogs will start RHP Philip Wetherell (5-6, 6.22 ERA) against RHP Daniel Winkler (8-10, 4.79 ERA) in game two of this series, scheduled for Tuesday night at 7:05 pm.
