June 28, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Hey now, you're an All-Star! The Pacific Coast League announced on Thursday afternoon that Round Rock Express closer RHP R.J. Alvarez has been selected to the league's roster for the 2018 Triple-A All-Star Game in Columbus, Ohio. This marks Alvarez' first career All-Star selection.
The fireballer currently leads the PCL in both saves with 15 and in games finished with 22. Alvarez' ranks second behind only Lehigh Valley's Pedro Beato for the Triple-A lead in saves. The righty is 2-1 with a 2.42 ERA (7 ER/26.0 IP) in 26 total appearances with the Express this season. He posted a season-long scoreless streak of 9.0 consecutive innings from April 7-May 3.
Alvarez was received on waivers by the Texas Rangers from the Chicago Cubs on September 10, 2016. He spent the duration of the 2017 campaign in Round Rock, leading the team with 45 appearances. The West Palm Beach, Florida-native went 1-2 with a 4.43 ERA (22 ER/44.2 IP) with the E-Train a year ago, racking up a career high seven saves. He set a new career high in the category by picking up his eighth save of the season back on May 20 during a stretch in which he recorded a save in five straight appearances from May 12-24.
Following a prolific career at Florida Atlantic University, the righty was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in the third round of the 2012 June Draft. After three seasons in the Angels organization, he was traded to the San Diego Padres, where he made his Major League debut in 2014. Alvarez was traded to the Oakland Athletics in December 2014, where he later went on to appear in 21 major league games with the club.
In total, Alvarez posted no record with a 7.39 ERA (23 ER/28.0 IP) in 31 total relief appearances with the Padres and A's. In 223 career games at the minor league level, Alvarez is 14-12 with a 3.50 ERA (98 ER/252.0 IP) and has converted 38 of 47 total save opportunities.
The 31st annual Triple-A All-Star Game is set for Wednesday, July 11 at 6:00 p.m. CDT at Huntington Park, home of the Columbus Clippers. The game will be broadcast live on MiLB.tv.
