June 28, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release
Today's Game: 2018 All-Star Socrates Brito is set to make his first start since being named to the Pacific Coast League All-Star team. Brito hit two home runs last night to go along with Kevin Cron's three. Austin Mason will make the first Triple-A start of his career. The 24-year-old from The Citadel is 2-4 this season with Visalia and has thrown 28.1 innings. Reno has won back-to-back games against Salt Lake for the first time this season and looks to make it three in a row tonight.
Last Game: Game three in the four-game series against the Salt Lake Bees was taken by the Reno Aces by the score of 14-4. The Aces scored 14 runs on 16 hits. Offensively, the Aces were again led by Kevin Cron who hit three home runs for the second time in his career. Socrates Brito added two of his own, going back-to-back with Cron two times tonight. Starting pitcher Anthony Vasquez went 6.0 innings allowing three runs on five hits with seven strikeouts. The win improves the Aces to a record of 36-43 on the season, 10.5 games back of the first place Fresno Grizzlies.
Historic Game of Cron: The Triple-A All-Star Game isn't for another two weeks, but Kevin Cron and Jabari Blash played some Home Run Derby a little early. Cron tied his career-best with three home runs on Wednesday night, one of which was a grand slam. The reigning Southern League MVP tallied a career-high seven RBI in his three-home runs effort. Cron's three home runs tie an Aces record. Cole Gillespie and Chris Owings are the only other two with three HR in a single game.
Back-to-back Jacks: Socrates Brito and Kevin Cron became the first Aces duo in franchise history to hit back-to-back home runs two times in a single game. Reno has hit back-to-back homers five times this season: Marcus Littlewood/Kristopher Negron (4/27 @ SAC), Anthony Recker/Daniel Robertson (4/30 @ ELP), Christian Walker/Socrates Brito (6/22 @ Las Vegas) and Cron/Brito (6/27 vs. Salt Lake) twice. The only other duo with two or more back-to-back home runs is Cody Ransom and Andy Tracy. Ransom and Tracy accomplished this feat three times in 2011 en route to a Division Championship.
Hey Now, You're an All-Star: Socrates Brito was named to the 2018 Pacific Coast League All-Star team this morning. Brito, 25, is leading the PCL in batting (.358), has recorded 31 extra-base hits and is second on the team in RBI with 42. The outfielder has been on a tear this month. He is batting .432 with 32 hits, 10 doubles, 9 home runs and 21 RBI. He leads the team in stolen bases with three, OPS .506, SLG .932 and OPS 1.438 in 20 games. Brito is one of many Triple-A All-Stars who have been on the Aces roster this season. Ildemaro Vargas, Christian Walker and Jimmie Sherfy (2017). Jack Reinheimer and Braden Shipley (2016). Former Aces outfielder Zach Borenstein was named to the 2018 All-Star team today as a member of the Las Vegas 51's.
Greater Nevada Field Week-long Celebration: Greater Nevada Field will be the place to be in Downtown Reno the week of July 4th. Reno 1868 FC will play the Real Monarchs SLC on July 3rd with fireworks to follow. The San Francisco Giants top affiliate, Sacramento River Cats, will come to town on the 4th of July with fireworks to follow. Saint Mary's Fireworks Friday is slated for July 6th and Margaritaville Night is scheduled for July 7th. For tickets and information visit renoaces.com.
