Iowa Cubs News Release
METAIRIE, LA - The Iowa Cubs (29-49) carried their momentum from yesterday to work a 5-3 win over the New Orleans Baby Cakes (37-42), Thursday at Shrine on Airline. Iowa also secured a 3-1 series victory, its first since May.
A big first inning drove the I-Cubs to a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Chesny Young grabbed the game's first hit with one out, swiped second and moved 90 feet from home on a Victor Caratini fly out. Ryan Court collected on a 1-2 count, driving a two-out single to left to score Young. Jason Vosler, recently called up from Double-A Tennessee, stole the spotlight in the inning as he crushed his first Triple-A home run to give Iowa the 3-0 lead.
Caratini got in on the action with a blast over the right-field wall in the third to extend Iowa's lead to 4-0. It was his fourth long ball of the season as he gathered his 20th RBI in 28 games with Iowa.
New Orleans was able to foil the shutout in the bottom of the third. Magneuris Sierra roped a single on the first pitch of the inning and Garrett Cooper doubled to bring in the run. That was the only offensive drive Iowa would allow until the ninth.
Eric Campbell made it interesting with a two-run shot off Cory Mazzoni in the final frame to cut Iowa's lead to two. With one out in the inning, Mazzoni was able to induce a groundout and a line out to secure the I-Cub win.
Making a spot-start, Zach Hedges was sturdy for Iowa allowing a single run on five hits while walking one and fanning two through 4.0 innings. New Iowa additions Craig Brooks and James Norwood were brilliant as Brooks spun 2.0 scoreless innings of relief to earn his first Triple-A victory, while Norwood fanned five through 2.0 shutout frames.
The Iowa offense rattled off 10 hits with Taylor Davis collecting three, while Zagunis and Caratini each nabbed a pair. Vosler got his first Triple-A multi-RBI game, batting in two.
Iowa returns to Principal Park for a five-game set with the Memphis Redbirds beginning with a 7:08 first pitch tomorrow. The homestand features holiday fireworks shows on July 2 and 3, while special guests Fergie Jenkins and Andre Dawson will be signing autographs June 30-July 2 to raise money for the Fergie Jenkins Foundation.
