June 28, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release
FRESNO, Calif. - On Thursday the Pacific Coast League released its 33-man roster for the 31st annual Triple-A All-Star Game, which will be played between the PCL and International League at Huntington Park in Columbus, Ohio on Wednesday, July 11, home of the Columbus Clippers (Cleveland Indians). The contest will air live on MLB Network beginning at 4:00 p.m. PT. Players were elected to the team by a combination of online fan vote, and balloting by club coaching staff, front office and local media. Corner infielders A.J. Reed and J.D. Davis, outfielder Kyle Tucker and catcher Garrett Stubbs will be the Fresno representatives on the PCL side. Grizzlies' pitching coach Dyar Miller joins Iowa Cubs manager Marty Pevey and Round Rock Express coach Geno Petralli on the PCL staff.
Fresno (46-32) is currently in first place in the PCL's Pacific Northern Division by five and a half games. All stats are as of June 27:
A.J. Reed is in his fifth professional season with the Houston Astros organization. The 2014 second round draft pick out of the University of Kentucky posted a .261 average in 2017 for Fresno, blasting 34 home runs (led all of Minor League Baseball) while driving in 104 RBI (second-most in Triple-A). Reed is currently batting .266. He is ranked second in Triple-A home runs with 18 and leads all of Triple-A with 67 RBI. He was called up to the Major Leagues for the first time this season on June 28.
J.D. Davis is in his fifth professional season with the Houston Astros organization. The 2014 third round draft pick out of Cal-State Fullerton posted a .295 average in 16 games for Fresno in 2017 before being called up to Houston on August 5 for the first time. He played in 24 games for the Astros last season. Davis has spent time between Houston and Fresno this season. He is top 10 in Triple-A in batting with a .337 average, while posting three four-hit games for Fresno so far this season. Davis hit for the cycle on May 17 at El Paso.
Kyle Tucker is in his fourth professional season with the Houston Astros organization. The 2015 first round draft pick is rated as the top Houston position player prospect by both Baseball America and MLB.com. Tucker is riding a current team-high 16-game hit streak. During the streak, Tucker is 32-for-68 (.471), with four home runs, seven doubles, 14 RBI, 16 runs scored, six walks and five steals. Tucker is second in Triple-A with 60 RBI, to only Reed, his teammate and fellow all-star.
Garrett Stubbs is in his fourth professional season with the Houston Astros organization. The 2015 eighth round draft pick out of the University of Southern California played in a career-high 98 games between Double-A and Triple-A in 2017. He threw out 32% of would-be base-stealers a season ago. Stubbs is batting .346 with three triples and four steals in 43 games this season. He has thrown out 13 of 28 base runners (.464).
Dyar Miller is in his 51st season of professional baseball as either a player or coach, his sixth season with the Houston Astros, and his third as the organization's Triple-A pitching coach at Fresno. Last season, Miller mentored four pitchers who made their MLB debuts with in-season call-ups. This season under Miller's guidance the Grizzlies' pitching staff is ranked third in the PCL with a 4.03 club ERA, and has the lowest ERA in the elevation-inclined Pacific Conference.
