Roach Named IL Player of the Month
July 2, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- RHP Donny Roach, who posted a remarkable 5-0 record with a miniscule 0.98 ERA in six games during the month of June with the Charlotte Knights, has been named as the International League's Player of the Month, as announced by the International League of Professional Baseball Clubs Inc. today.
For the month of June, Roach made a total of six appearances (five starts) and allowed just four earned runs over 36.2 innings pitched. On June 27th, Roach shined against the Durham Bulls in Durham, NC to earn his league-leading ninth win of the season. On that day, he tossed a season-high eight innings pitched in Charlotte's 5-1 win (8.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO). He is the first member of the Knights to earn an IL Player of the Month honor since Andy Wilkins took home the award in July of 2014.
Roach, a native of Las Vegas, NV, is 9-2 overall with a 2.65 ERA in 16 games (15 starts) this season with the Knights. The veteran right-hander, who was recently named to the International League All-Star Team, is among the IL leaders in a number of categories. Currently, he is first in winning percentage (.818), first in wins (9), second in innings pitched (95.0), and third in ERA (2.65). His 15 starts this season are also tied for the second most in the league.
Signed as a free agent by the Chicago White Sox on January 24, 2018, Roach has appeared in parts of three major league seasons with the San Diego Padres (2014), Chicago Cubs (2015), and Seattle Mariners (2016). He made his professional debut in 2010 with Orem (Rookie).
The Knights will open a quick two-game series against the Norfolk Tides (Triple-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles) tonight at 7:05 p.m. from Norfolk, VA. The team returns home to BB&T Ballpark for a two-game series against the Durham Bulls from July 4-5. BB&T Ballpark will also host Team USA vs. Japan on Tuesday, July 3rd thanks to Sharp Business Systems. Tickets for all games this season are available online at CharlotteKnights.com, by phone at 704-274-8282, or in person at the BB&T Ballpark Ticket Office.
