Francisco Mejia Named International League Batter of the Week

July 2, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Columbus Clippers News Release

The International League announced today that Columbus catcher/outfielder Francisco Mejia and Louisville right-handed reliever Kevin Quackenbush have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from June 25-July 1. Mejia's weekly award is the fourth claimed by a member of the Clippers, following Shane Bieber (May 14-20, May 21-27) and Adam Plutko (May 28-June 3), while Quackenbush is the first Louisville player to be so honored this season. Both of this week's recipients were named to the International League All-Star Team and are slated to appear in Columbus for the Huntington Bank Triple-A All-Star Game, presented by Gildan, on July 11.

Francisco Mejia led the International League over the past week with 16 hits, a .593 batting average, six doubles, and a .645 on-base percentage to help the red-hot Columbus Clippers climb to within 4.0 games of the West Division lead. Mejia hit safely in all seven contests this week, and saw an amazing run of eight straight games with multiple hits finally end on Sunday when he entered as a pinch hitter and went 1-for-2. The week also saw him produce his seventh long ball of the season and his eighth career four-hit game. After entering June hitting below .200, Mejia now has his season batting average up to .291.

22-year-old Francisco Mejia is in his sixth season as a professional player after being signed by

Cleveland as a non-drafted free agent in 2012. Last year he was named Rookie of the Year in the Double-A Eastern League and also made his big league debut for the Indians. Mejia is a native of Bani, Dominican Republic.
