Allentown, PA - The Syracuse Chiefs hit four home runs, including Chris Dominguez's grand slam, in a 9-4 win over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs Monday night at Coca-Cola Park. Dominguez, Andrew Stevenson, Moises Sierra and Adrian Sanchez all homered as the Chiefs took the series opener.
Syracuse (35-47) started the scoring eight pitches into the game. Stevenson doubled to start the game against Nick Anderson. Stevenson moved to third on a groundout and scored on Jacob Wilson's RBI single for a 1-0 lead.
Lehigh Valley (47-35) used two home runs to grab a 3-1 lead. Trevor Plouffe led off the second with a home run against John Simms to tie the game at one. Then in the third, Joey Meneses hit a two-run home run to give the IronPigs the lead.
But the Chiefs struck gold in the fourth. Syracuse loaded the bases after Matt Reynolds walked, Yadiel Hernandez singled and Sierra singled. Dominguez followed with an opposite field shot for a grand slam. It was Dominguez's second day in a row with a home run, and gave the Chiefs a 5-3 lead. Two batters later, Stevenson cleared the 17-foot wall in right with a solo home run for a 6-3 lead.
In the fifth, Sierra joined the home-run barrage with a solo home run off Zac Curtis, also to right field, for a 7-3 lead.
The IronPigs would trim the lead in the fifth. Dean Anna doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a groundout to second to make the score 7-4.
Syracuse added insurance runs in the seventh and ninth. Wilson doubled to start the seventh and Raudy Read singled to put runners on first and third. Two batters later, Hernandez grounded into a force out at second, and Wilson scored from third for an 8-4 advantage.
In the ninth, Sanchez hit his third home run of the season to left-center to cap the scoring at 9-4.
The Chiefs and IronPigs continue their series Tuesday night at Coca-Cola Park with RHP Brady Dragmire scheduled to start for Syracuse and RHP Tom Eshelman for Lehigh Valley.
