From the Notes

ABOUT YESTERDAY: A career-high tying six walks issued by reliever Damien Magnifico led to six unanswered runs for Columbus yesterday as the Indians dropped the finale, 8-3. The Tribe used an Eric Wood solo shot in the fifth and a two-run tater by Ryan Lavarnway in the seventh to take a brief 3-2 advantage, but a bases-loaded walk to Brandon Barnes leveled the score after the stretch. Adam Rosales cranked a tiebreaking two-run blast during a five-run eighth that also featured run-scoring hits by Eric Haase and Drew Maggi. The Clippers took a 2-0 lead three batters into the first against Tyler Eppler, as Greg Allen, Yu Chang and Yandy Diaz all hit doubles. Those were the only runs Eppler would surrender; the Tribe righty delivered six innings and yielded five hits and three walks with eight punchouts.

SWEPT AWAY: Indy has dropped four straight games, each of them coming in its weekend series at Columbus. The Indians hadn't been swept in a four-game series since July 21-24, 2014 by Charlotte at Victory Field. The four-game sweep by Columbus over Indy was its third since 1988; the others came from July 22-25, 2005 and April 7-10, 2011.

THREE UP, FOUR DOWN: The Indians began their nine-game road trip with three consecutive wins in Toledo, followed by four losses to the Clippers. The last time Indy won at least three straight and followed it with a four-game skid came from July 23-28, 2017. The Indians earned a 10-2 win at Gwinnett and 4-1 and 5-2 victories over Rochester at The Vic before losing two apiece to the Red Wings (7-1, 3-1) and PawSox (5-0, 2-1).

RODRIGUEZ ON A REHAB: Sean Rodriguez begins a major league rehab assignment with Indy tonight, batting second and playing third base. The 33-year-old was placed on the 10-day DL by Pittsburgh on June 27 with a right quadriceps strain. With the Buccos, the journeyman has hit .145 (17-for-117) with three homers, one triple, four doubles and 13 RBI in 53 games. Over his last 10 games in the bigs, he was just 1-for-24 (.042) with 12 strikeouts. Rodriguez appeared in five rehab games with Gwinnett in 2017 and hit .056 (1-for-18) with four walks and five strikeouts.

WHEN WE MET LAST: The Indians and Bats haven't played each other since May 24, a game the Tribe won 4-0 at Victory Field to win a four-game series, 3-1. That shutout gave Indy a 24-20 record and dropped the Bats to 15 games under .500 at 14-29. Since then, the Indians have gone 19-17 while the Bats have played above .500 (18-17), as well.

HEAD-TO-HEAD AGAINST LOUISVILLE: The Indians are batting .266 as a team with 30 runs scored in eight games (3.75 RPG) against Louisville this season. Jordan Luplow (.435, 10-for-23, 6 XBH, 6 RBI), Wyatt Mathisen (.429, 6-for-14, 1 HR, 3 RBI) and Pablo Reyes (.370, 10-for-27, 1 HR, 4 RBI) have had the most success at the plate. Indy's pitching staff has surrendered just 25 runs (3.13 RPG), posting a 2.57 ERA (20 ER/70.0 IP) along the way. They have fanned 60 batters, walked 24 and yielded 67 hits (five home runs).

LOVE FOR LUPLOW: Jordan Luplow has hit safely in 22 of his last 26 overall. He had his RBI streak of six straight games snapped yesterday in Columbus, but he did manage to go 3-for-3 with a walk and run scored. His six-game stretch with at least one RBI was the longest by a Tribe player since 2015 and it was the second such occurrence of his career (also: Aug. 6-11, 2015 with Single-A West Virginia). He is batting .431 (25-for-58) with three homers, five doubles, 14 RBI, 11 runs scored and 12 walks against just seven strikeouts over his last 17 games. Since May 1, he has hit .325 (66-for-203) with 31 extra-base hits, 39 RBI and 29 runs scored in 56 games. All eight of his home runs with Indy have come on the road.

ALL-STAR SNUB: Kevin Kramer hit safely in 18 June games and is batting .379 (11-for-29) with one triple, four doubles, four RBI, and six runs scored over his last eight contests. He recorded an extra-base hit in 14 of 26 games in June. He also had a team-high 12 multi-hit games this past month, leading him to a .330 average (31-for-94) and 1.056 OPS. He has 34 XBH (20 2B, 3 3B, 11 HR) in 74 games this season, second most in the IL, and also ranks among league leaders in total bases (3rd, 137), home runs (T-3rd, 11), runs scored (T-4th, 44), doubles (T-5th, 20) and slugging percentage (T-5th, .495).

BY THE NUMBERS - July 2, 1997 / July 2, 2012: On this date in 1997, Tribe pitcher Pedro Martinez threw a nine-inning shutout in Nashville. Indy won the game 9-0. Martinez scattered six hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Six years ago, the Tribe won a 14-inning marathon over the Bats in Louisville by a 6-4 score. The game was played in 4 hours and 46 minutes, the fourth-longest affair in the Victory Field era.
