International League Names Players of the Week

July 2, 2018 - International League (IL1) News Release

The International League announced today that Columbus catcher/outfielder Francisco Mejia and Louisville right-handed reliever Kevin Quackenbush have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from June 25-July 1. Mejia's weekly award is the fourth claimed by a member of the Clippers, following Shane Bieber (May 14-20, May 21-27) and Adam Plutko (May 28- June 3), while Quackenbush is the first Louisville player to be so honored this season. Both of this week's recipients were named to the International League All-Star Team and are slated to appear in Columbus for the Huntington Bank Triple-A All-Star Game, presented by Gildan, on July 11.

FRANCISCO MEJIA, Columbus Clippers IL BATTER OF THE WEEK Francisco Mejia led the International League over the past week with 16 hits, a .593 batting average, six doubles, and a .645 on-base percentage to help the red-hot Columbus Clippers climb to within 4.0 games of the West Division lead. Mejia hit safely in all seven contests this week, and saw an amazing run of eight straight games with multiple hits finally end on Sunday when he entered as a pinch hitter and went 1-for-2. The week also saw him produce his seventh long ball of the season and his eighth career four-hit game. After entering June hitting below .200, Mejia now has his season batting average up to .291.

22-year-old Francisco Mejia is in his sixth season as a professional player after being signed by Cleveland as a non-drafted free agent in 2012. Last year he was named Rookie of the Year in the Double-A Eastern League and also made his big league debut for the Indians. Mejia is a native of Bani, Dominican Republic.

KEVIN QUACKENBUSH, Louisville Bats IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK The League's only reliever with three saves this week was Bats closer Kevin Quackenbush, who continued his remarkable season by closing out three victories in scoreless fashion. The first save required a little extra work, as Quackenbush was brought on with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 8th of Wednesday's contest in Columbus with the Bats ahead 11-10. He induced a fly ball to end the threat before closing the door in the 9th to end the wild affair. Quackebush is now tied for 2nd in the League on the year with eleven saves and is 4th with 21 games finished.

29-year-old Kevin Quackenbush is in his first season with the Reds after signing as a free agent in October. The first seven seasons of his career were spent in the San Diego organization, which included 193 games played and eight saves for the Padres. Quackenbush is a native of Land O'Lakes, Florida.
