Likewise, the Peoria Rivermen will venture to Toronto to take on the Marlies in their home rink, Ricoh Coliseum, only once during 2005-06, on Friday, February 3, 2006. Like the Rivermen, the Marlies are a new member of the American Hockey League (AHL) this season, and they are the primary affiliate squad of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Marlies are now tied for fourth place in the North Division of the Western Conference with a 5-6-0-0 record and 10 points. Toronto's four leading scorers all have nine points so far this season: center John Pohl (5 goals, 4 assists), left wing Bates Battaglia (4 goals, 5 assists), center Jeremy Williams (3 goals, 6 assists), and winger Brett Engelhardt (1 goal, 8 assists). Of the team's two goaltenders, Jean-Francois Racine has posted the better numbers, now possessing a 3-3-0 record, a 3.42 goals-against average, and an .896 save percentage. The Toronto power-play unit enters the week tied for 12th in the AHL with a 16.7 percent conversion rate. On the penalty kill, the Marlies rank near the bottom of the League (25th position) with a penalty-killing percentage of 75.3.

Sunday, November 13, RIVERMEN @ Iowa: The Peoria Rivermen and the Iowa Stars tangle for the third time this season in a matinee affair this coming Sunday. The Rivermen took each of the previous two Peoria-Iowa match-ups by scores of 5-4 and 7-4. Following Sunday's game, these two West Division foes will still have seven other meetings on the docket for 2005-06. The AHL affiliate of the NHL's Dallas Stars, Iowa enters this week's action tied for last place in the West Division at 4-6-0-0. Surprisingly, a defenseman leads the Stars in scoring. Blueliner Patrick Traverse has registered nine points, all assists, in 10 games played. Dan Ellis has been the best Stars goaltender so far this season, with a record of 2-3-0, a 2.40 goals-against average, and a .917 save percentage. On the power play, Iowa's 12.6 percent success rate ranks 22nd in the AHL, while the team stands 17th on the penalty kill at 82.7 percent.

RIVERMEN ACTION LAST WEEK

Friday, November 4, RIVERMEN 2 vs. Omaha 0: In their first-ever meeting with the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights, the Peoria Rivermen took a 2-0 victory. This game turned out to be a classic goaltending duel, as Omaha's Brent Krahn and Peoria's Curtis Sanford turned aside shot after shot and combined to allow no goals through the first two periods. Early in the third period, however, Rivermen right wing Colin Hemingway broke the scoreless tie with a seeing-eye shot from the left wing half-boards that slid through the legs of several players before finally slipping under Krahn and into the goal. That tally put the Rivermen up 1-0 only 1:51 into the third frame. Just over one minute later, winger Mike Glumac deflected a right-point shot by Hemingway as Glumac skated through the slot by the right hash marks, changing the direction of the puck enough to get it by Krahn for the final 2-0 score. Sanford finished with 28 saves to post his second shutout of the season and his second whitewash in his last two starts. The shutout was the third consecutive blanking for the Rivermen as a team, and their fourth shutout in their last five games. The Rivermen out-shot the Ak-Sar-Ben Knights 30-28, and both clubs went zero for eight on the power play.

Saturday, November 5, Omaha 3 @ RIVERMEN 2: The Peoria Rivermen suffered just their third loss so far this season last Saturday versus the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights. The Knights got on the scoreboard about midway through the opening period thanks to left wing Tomi Maki. The goal ended Peoria's shutout streak at 204:43. After Omaha had extended its lead to 2-0 at the 5:45 mark of the second period, Rivermen right wing Colin Hemingway tallied his fifth goal of the season to pare that lead in half at 17:18 of the second. Omaha center David Moss made the game 3-1 for the Knights just 41 seconds into the third period. Again, however, Peoria responded, this time with a goal from left wing Charles Linglet at 9:51. But it was too little, too late for the Rivermen, as regulation time expired with the Knights ahead 3-2. In goal for the Rivermen, Jason Bacashihua took the loss, his first of the season. Although Omaha outscored Peoria in this contest, Peoria out-shot Omaha by a count of 35-23. Omaha was two for eight on the power play, while Peoria converted one of its 10 power plays.
