RHP Sean Black Joins Thunder; Vidal Nuño Named EL Pitcher of Week

(Trenton, NJ) - The Trenton Thunder, Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, announced Monday that RHP Sean Black has been promoted from the Tampa Yankees to join the Thunder bullpen. RHP Ricky Orta has been placed on the disabled list with right arm soreness. Black, who reaches Trenton for the first time in his career, is a native of Mt. Laurel, NJ and pitched collegiately at Seton Hall.

Additionally, Trenton starting pitcher Vidal Nuño has been named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of June 25th-July 1st. The 24-year old started two games for the Thunder last week and had a record of 1- 0 with 12 strikeouts and a 1.46 ERA.

Black pitched in 12 games for Tampa this season (7 starts) and went 2-4 with one save and a 6.75 ERA. He was a seventh round draft choice by the Yankees from Seton Hall in 2009. Orta left Sunday's game at Portland in the bottom of the ninth inning after pitching 1.2 scoreless innings.

Nuño, who is a native of National City, California, made his first appearance of the week on Monday against the visiting Portland Sea Dogs and surrendered just two hits and one walk while striking out six over seven shutout innings to earn the win in Trenton's 7-1 victory. In his second start of the week on Sunday at Portland the 5'11", 195 lb. hurler gave up two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out six over 5.2 innings pitched. When he left the game he was in line for the win but went on to pick up a no-decision in Trenton's 6-3, 11-inning victory.

Nuño 's 12 strikeouts tied for the league lead last week and he also ranked second among all pitchers in WHIP (0.57) and batting average against (.140). Vidal, who has a record of 3-1 with a 1.18 ERA in eight starts since being promoted to Trenton from Class-A Tampa on May 21st, was signed by the New York Yankees as a free agent on June 18, 2011. He was originally drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 48th round of the 2009 draft.
