Rampage Rally to Defeat Griffins 6-5 in Overtime

SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 26, 2014) - John McFarland scored the overtime game-winner with 15.6 seconds remaining on the clock and the San Antonio Rampage rallied from three goals down to defeat the reigning Calder Cup Champion Grand Rapids Griffins 6-5 before 4,995 at the AT&T Center.

McFarland, playing in his 100th career professional game, had himself a three-point night (2g-1a). Jed Ortmeyer notched two goals, with the latter coming as his 50th career AHL goal. Quinton Howden registered two assists on the night, while defenseman Doug Janik recorded a team-high three assists in the win. Bobby Butler and Joey Crabb each added goals, while Ryan Whitney collected an assist in his third straight game.

Jacob Markstrom made 35-of-40 saves in the win.

For the sixth time in their last seven, the Rampage drew first blood. Seven minutes into the opening frame, Ortmeyer was fed by Howden, and the winger roofed it top right corner over Grand Rapids net-minder Jared Coreau's shoulder at 7:08 to put the Rampage up 1-0.

Defenseman Jonathan Racine picked up the secondary assist.

Just under five minutes later, Landon Ferraro tapped in a backdoor goal at 12:49 on the power play to knot the game at 1-1. Their celebration was cut short as the Rampage responded just 24 seconds later.

It was Ortmeyer again, finding the puck and pushing it through a scrum in the crease for his second on the night. Whitney and Logan Shaw collected the assists on Ortmeyer's eighth of the season.

The Griffins would get a late power play chance, but were unable to convert and the Rampage took their 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

Grand Rapids entered the game outscoring opponents 62-31 in the second, and exploded for four goals to up the number to 65 on the season. Travis Novak and Ryan Sproul each added a goal, while Teemu Pulkkinen tallied the remaining two, including the Griffins' second power-play goal on the night.

Early in the third, the Rampage began their comeback. Crabb fired one from the top of the left circle at 1:54 to cut the Griffins' lead to 5-3, and was quickly followed by a Butler power-play strike just 17 seconds into the man advantage at 4:18.

McFarland's goal with 1:28 remaining in regulation locked the game at five, and subsequently sent the game into overtime for the fifth time in the last seven games for the Rampage. It was looking dangerously close to another shootout, but McFarland was the hero again, beating Coreau for the second time and winning it for the Rampage 6-5.

The Rampage went 1-for-4 with the extra man, and Grand Rapids went 2-for-4. Grand Rapids outshot the Rampage 40-33.
