Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers bullpen provided a strong outing but the offense pushed across just one run, matching a season-low four hits at Cheney Stadium in their Wednesday night defeat to the Sacramento River Cats, 4-1.

The Rainiers (7-13) got their lone run on an RBI single from former Sacramento (10-9) utility player, Orlando Calixte. The left fielder drove home third baseman Shed Long with a knock to right field in the bottom of the fifth, cutting the deficit at the time, 3-1.

Tacoma also got hits from Long and designated hitter Eric Young, Jr., who were both stranded on the bases to end the game with the potential tying run at the plate.

Right-hander Christian Bergman (0-2) made his first home start of the season on the hill for Tacoma, going 4 1/3 innings and allowing three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four. The recently signed hurler got through the first two innings with no damage and three punch-outs.

Bergman was relieved by right-hander Robinson Leyer with runners at the corners and one out in the fifth. The D.R. native forced an infield popup and struck out clean-up hitter Mac Williamson to end the inning with no runs allowed.

Leyer (1 2/3 IP) collaborated with righty Matt Festa (2 IP) to deliver 3 2/3 scoreless innings with one combined hit allowed and each struck out four hitters. Ruben Alaniz made his first appearance since being optioned back to Tacoma on Monday, allowing a run but striking out three in the ninth. Altogether, Tacoma pitchers punched out 15 River Cats hitters.

Game two of the five-game tilt starts at 7:05 p.m. PDT on a Thirsty Thursday presented by Coors Light at Cheney Stadium. Fans can enjoy $2 Coors Light cans and watch southpaw Tommy Milone (1-1, 4.95) match up against Sacramento right-hander Enderson Franco (0-0, 6.55). Mike Curto will have the call on South Sound Talk 850 with audio streaming available on the Rainiers TuneIn Radio Network.
