Playoff race heats up in South Division

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte Checkers went 1-2-0 last week grabbing a shootout win at Columbia Friday and losing two one-goal games to Augusta and Gwinnett on Wednesday and Saturday, respectively. Charlotte, 29-29-5 (63 points), is currently in fifth place of the South Division and is five points ahead of Augusta. South Carolina is ahead of Charlotte with 70 points and has clinched a playoff spot. As of Monday, March 20th, the Checkers can clinch the playoffs with six points.

Wednesday, March 15, 2006 vs. Augusta, L, 4-5

The Augusta Lynx scored four goals during the third period to down the Charlotte Checkers 5-4 Wednesday in front of 3,193 fans at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Nicolas Corbeil notched a goal and four assists to lead the Lynx.

Friday, March 18, 2006 @ Columbia, W-SO, 4-3

The Charlotte Checkers blew a two-goal, third period lead, but outlasted the Columbia Inferno 4-3 in a shootout Friday night at the Carolina Coliseum. After Juris Stals had given the Checkers a 3-1 lead four minutes into the final period, Columbia scored twice in a 60 second span to tie the game at 3-3.

After both teams went scoreless the rest of the period and in the five-minute, sudden-death overtime session, it was Charlotte who prevailed in the shootout. Dusty Jamieson and Bryan Rodney scored in the shootout while Checkers goalie Chris Holt stopped four of five Inferno shooters to notch the win in net. Holt was spectacular all night in making 41 saves for his seventh victory of the season.

Rodney joined Stals and Daniel Sparre in scoring in regulation for the Checkers, with Columbia getting goals from Mike Stathopoulis, Jason Reimers, and Brandon Nolan. Inferno goalie Chris Houle took the loss with 20 saves.

Saturday, March 18, 2006 @ Gwinnett, L, 3-4

The Charlotte Checkers battled hard but still fell short in a 4-3 loss to the Gwinnett Gladiators Saturday night in Duluth, Georgia. Trailing throughout the game, the Checkers managed to get within one goal late in the contest before finally bowing out. Cam Brown, Brad Schell, Mike York and Adam Smyth all scored for Gwinnett, with Charlotte getting its goals from Peter Worrell, Mike Bayrack and Daniel Sparre.

Jeff Glass was solid in net for the Checkers with 34 saves, despite yielding four goals. Gladiators' netminder Sean Fields only faced 15 shots and picked up the win with 12 saves.
