Gaustad scores twice to lead Lynx to win
March 20, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
BJ Gaustad scored twice, including the game winner, to lead the Augusta Lynx to a 6-3 win over the Checkers in Charlotte on Monday night.
Anthony Battaglia would open the scoring at 11:13 from rookie Will Bodine, appearing in his first pro game, and Nicolas Corbeil. Bodine made a key keep at the blue line to allow Corbeil to feed Battaglia for the chip over the shoulder of Chris Holt to get the Lynx on the board.
Gaustad followed with his first of the night late in the period, getting the puck after Jay Latulippe's aggressive forecheck kept the play going and cutting in on Holt with a backhand shot that found the twine just 26 second before the end of the period.
Charlotte would fire up the scoring machine for three goals in 4:08, starting with a Steve MacIntyre goal at 4:02, and a Kris MacPhee marker just 17 seconds later to tie the game. Daniel Sparre got his third goal in two games against Augusta to give his team a short-lived lead, but the Lynx got a key power play opportunity and took advantage.
Corbeil picked up the rebound of a Chris Leinweber point shot at 8:59 to put Augusta back even with the Checkers, followed by Gaustad's second of the night at 13:31 for a lead the Lynx would never relinquish. Gaustad took a Martin Lapointe clear at the Checkers blue line and walked in alone on Holt, beating him with a backhand deke for a 4-3 lead after two periods of play.
In the third, the Lynx tacked on two more goals with a Leinweber power play marker and a Brian Passmore tally for the 6-3 final. The Lynx ended the game 2-for-6 on the power play, while Charlotte went 0-for-7.
The Lynx are right back at it Tuesday night as the Greenville Grrrowl come to town for a 7:35 pm game. Tickets are on sale now through the Lynx office at (706) 724-4ICE, through all TicketMaster locations, and on line at www.TicketMaster.com.
