Checkers Pay Tribute to 'Mullet Heads'

March 20, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Charlotte Checkers News Release

Checkers fans with a sense of humor and a mullet haircut will get the proverbial "heads-up" on Saturday, March 25th when the Checkers host the Florida Everblades. The puck will drop at 8:00 p.m. at Bobcats Arena and mullet-heads will be admitted to the game FREE of charge. Wear a mullet to the game and receive a complimentary ticket.

Whether the mullet haircut (short on the front sides; long in the back) is the fan's natural hair or purchased at a favorite costume or party outlet, if worn on Saturday night the result will be the same ... a free ticket to the game.

In order to encourage the wearing of the mullet, a few of Charlotte's high-profile folks have posed for promo pictures, including CRVA president Tim Newman, Chamber of Commerce president Bob Morgan, Checkers president Jeff Longo, and - TA-DA ... The Observer's own Insider columnist, Jeff Elder. Even Chubby the Checker was photographed wearing a mega-sized (4-wig assembled) black mullet.

"It's nearing the end of the season and our fans like to have some extra fun," said Checkers president Jeff Longo. "Mullet haircuts put a smile on the face of those who wear them and those who look at them, including our players and coaches who will also be sporting mullets during the pre-game skate on Saturday." And who can resist an auburn-haired, full-mullet-ed Tim Newman, or a black-curly-mullet-ed Bob Morgan, or especially a bright blond-mullet-ed Jeff Elder?!

The Checkers hope the arena will be filled with mullet-heads on Saturday ... and also with those who simply "admire" them. One mullet = one free ticket to Saturday night's game. To encourage participation and to egg on potential mullet-heads, the Checkers have posted a sampling of Checkers players in their mullets on the team's website. Go to www.gocheckers.com.
