Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

SIOUX FALLS- The leadoff man's job is simple; get on base. Joe Anthonsen did just that in the series finale against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.

Joe Anthonsen reached base in all five plate appearances, going 4-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Sioux Falls Pheasants past Fargo-Moorhead, 9-5, to win the rubber match of a three-game series Wednesday at Sioux Falls Stadium.

Much like Tuesday's game, the RedHawks got on the board first, when Jesse Hoorelbeke's sacrifice fly brought home Zach Penprase to give Fargo-Moorhead a 1-0 lead in the first.

The Pheasants evened the score in the second when Hunter Jobes hit a laser into the right field seats for his third home run of the season.

Fargo-Moorhead retook the lead with two runs in the third. Francisco Leandro misplayed a ball in left field hit by Carlo Cota, allowing Todd Jennings to score. Nic Jackson drove in Cota on a line drive to right field before being thrown trying to stretch it into a double.

The Birds took control of an early back-and-forth battle with a three-run third to give Sioux Falls a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Brandon Sing smacked a two-run double and later scored the decisive run on an misplayed ball in left field off the bat of Francisco Leandro.

"What I liked was that it seemed like we really scrapped tonight," said manager Steve Shirley. "We got timely hits, we made things happen and that's what you have to do compete."

The Pheasants scored runs in six consecutive innings. Sing meanwhile continued his scorching month of July, finishing 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI on the night. He is hitting .425 with seven home runs and 14 RBI in July.

With Sioux Falls leading 7-3, the RedHawks loaded the bases to chase starter Kyle Ruwe with no outs in the sixth inning. Reliever Dan McDaniel's first pitch resulted in a double play that scored one Fargo-Moorhead run. A wild pitch plated Hoorelbeke to cut the Pheasants lead to 7-5.

In the bottom half, the Birds answered as Francisco Leandro doubled to drive in Sing and push the lead to three runs. Anthonsen's RBI single in the seventh built the lead back to four runs, putting the game away.

"These are the games we need to win," said Anthonsen, whose Pheasants play seven of their next eight series against division opponents "We were able to put to a couple of good games together, now we just need to keep it going."

Ruwe (3-3) collected the win, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits in five innings of work.

RedHawks starter Dan Blewett (0-1) took the loss in his debut with Fargo-Moorhead, completing 3 1/3 innings while giving up five runs, four earned, on six hits.

Jackson had three hits and an RBI for Fargo-Moorhead.

With the win, the Pheasants improved to 25-32 on the season.

The Birds head north to take the Winnipeg Goldeyes in a four-game division series starting at 7:05 p.m., on Thursday, July 14. The game will be broadcast live on 1230-AM KWSN and online at kwsn.com.
