Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

WICHITA, Ks.---Wingnuts pitchers Junior Guerra, Matt Nevarez and Josh Dew combined to throw the fourth no-hitter in American Association history Wednesday night at Lawrence Dumont Stadium, defeating the Shreveport-Bossier Captains 1-0. It marked the first time the Captains had been no-hit since joining the American Association in 2006.

Guerra (4-2) walked seven batters but struck out a season-high nine and allowed no hits through 7.1 innings. After walking four batters in the third inning, he retired 14 in a row before walking Captains shortstop Bryan Frichter with one out in the top of the eighth. Wingnuts manager Kevin Hooper then brought in Nevarez, who got Mike Provencher to hit into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.

The Wingnuts scored the game's only run on Josh Workman's two-out single in the fourth, which scored Jorge Delgado, who had singled off Captains starter Richard Salazar (4-4) with two down and the bases empty.

Dew (Sv, 12) got Robert Perry to fly out to left field to start off the ninth and then struck out Bryan Sabatella and Andres Rodriguez to preserve the no-hitter. It was the second no-no in Wingnuts history. On June 23, 2009, Will Savage pitched a no-hitter against the Sioux City Explorers in Sioux City for a 1-0 win.

The Captains, who had not been shutout all year prior to this series, were blanked in three of the four games against Wichita. Shreveport-Bossier was held scoreless in 33 of 36 innings in the series and did not score for the final 23 innings they came to the plate.

Shreveport-Bossier's best scoring chance came in the third when Guerra walked four batters. With two outs, he walked Provencher, Robert Perry and Bryan Sabatella but got Andres Rodriguez to hit into an inning-ending fielder's choice.

Salazar threw seven innings, allowing one run on five hits while walking two and striking out four. He was ejected along with Wichita second baseman Thomas Fitzgerald in the bottom of the eighth. Salazar hit Fitzgerald with a pitch and the two begin arguing as Fitzgerald walked down the first base line. Fitzgerald then charged toward the pitcher's mound but never reached Shreveport-Bossier's pitcher as the benches cleared and players and coaches intervened. Mark Haynes came in and pitched a held the Wingnuts scoreless for the rest of the eighth.

Shreveport-Bossier went 2-9 on their season-long 11 game road trip. With the off day Thursday, the Captains end a stretch of 20 games in 20 straight days. They went 7-12 over the stretch and are now 28-30 on the season.
