Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts shutout the Shreveport-Bossier Captains for a third time in four games, winning 1-0 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Wednesday night.

Three Wingnuts pitchers combined to throw the fourth no-hitter in American Association history, led by starter Junior Guerra who went the first seven and one-third innings.

Guerra struck out nine, walked seven, and retired 14 batters in a row from the third inning into the eighth. With one out in the top of the eighth, Guerra issued a full count walk to Bryan Frichter. Guerra, who finished the night at 123 pitches, was relieved by right-hander Matt Nevarez. Nevarez promptly induced an inning-ending groundball double play off the bat of leadoff hitter Mike Provencher.

Josh Dew took over in the top of the ninth, and retired the side in order to finish the no-hitter. Dew set down Robert Perry on a flyball to left field, and then struck out Bryan Sabatella and Andres Rodriguez back-to-back to earn his 12th save of the year.

Guerra escaped the Captains' lone scoring chance in the top of the third. With two outs and no one on base, Provencher, Perry, and Sabatella each walked to load the bases for Rodriguez. Guerra stranded all three runners when Rodriguez hit into a fielder's choice at shortstop.

The Wingnuts scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs and the bases empty, Jorge Delgado sliced a double to the right-center field fence. On the next pitch from Captains' starter Richard Salazar, Josh Workman muscled a single into shallow center field to score Delgado with what proved to be the only run of the night.

Guerra's run of setting down 14 consecutive Captains started with Rodriguez in the third. Guerra struck out two in both the fourth and six innings.

With one out in the top of the seventh, Palmer Karr Jr. lifted a deep fly ball to left-center field. Mike Conroy ran to the fence and made a short leap, before reaching over the wall and taking away a potential game-tying home run. Guerra finished the seventh by striking out Uriak Marquez.

Salazar took the loss, allowing one earned run in seven-plus innings. Salazar walked one and struck out four.

It was the second no-hitter in team history, both of which have now come in 1-0 victories. Will Savage had the other on June 23rd, 2009 at Sioux City.

The Wingnuts open a three-game series at Grand Prairie on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Ryan Hinson takes on right-hander Lance Janke. All the action can be heard locally on Oldies 93.5 KWME and worldwide at www.kleyam.com

The Wingnuts return home on Friday, July 22nd when they host the El Paso Diablos. For tickets, call the Wingnuts' office at (316) 264-NUTS or visit the Wingnuts' official website at www.wichitawingnuts.com
