Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats were missing the come-from-behind magic on Harry Potter Night at U. S. Steel Yard as the home team dropped a 5-3 decision to the Sioux City Explorers Wednesday.
The RailCats (32-26) saw another 2-0 lead turn into a defeat at the hands of the X's who improve to 29-28 on the season. âCats starter Alain Quijano earned the no-decision after leaving with a 2-1 lead over 6.2 strong innings. The southpaw held Sioux City to just six hits and one run while adding five strikeouts on the night.
Mike Massaro led the way for the RailCats offensively with three hits including a pair of doubles. Kyle Haines and Cristian Guerrero each added a pair of hits as well with Guerrero contributing a double and all three of the âCats RBI in the contest. Guerrero is also the first RailCats player to the 50 RBI mark in 2011 with his team leading 51.
A two-run first put the RailCats in front for the third straight night. Chris Carrara reached on an error and Massaro singled to set the stage for the heart of the âCats order. Despite seeing his 15-game hit streak snapped Wednesday, Boyer contributed a productive out moving the runners to second and third with a groundout to the right side Guerrero. The Dominican slugger singled to drive in Carrara and Massaro for the games first runs.
Sioux City cut the lead in half with a run in the third on an RBI single by Dustin Jones after a one out double by Brian Bistagne and the X's exploded for four in the eighth to take commanding 5-2 lead. RBI singles by Derek Schermerhorn, Kent Sakamoto, and TJ Bohn did the damage for the visitors. The RailCats got the tying run to the plate in the ninth when Massaro scored on a Guerrero double but failed to complete the comeback.
The RailCats begin a six-game road trip to Shreveport-Bossier and Fort Worth but will return to beautiful U. S. Steel Yard on Friday, July 22 to take on the archrival Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.
