Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Sox tried to get back after trailing the El Paso Diablos by six, but El Paso tied the game in the ninth and took the lead for good in the 11th inning to defeat the Sox 11-9 in front of 1,935 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium on Wednesday night.
Sox reliever Pat Overholt (1-1) got the loss, allowing two runs in three innings of relief. Diablos reliever Ray Silva (2-1) got the win, allowing just one hit in two and two-thirds innings.
The Diablos took the lead in the second inning as Alberto Espinosa reached and went to second on an error, went to third on a groundout and scored on a Scott Hodsdon RBI single for a 1-0 lead.
The Sox tied the game in the second as Tim Alberts hit a one-out double. Following an Alex Chavez bunt single to put runners on the corners, Kevin Butler singled to score Alberts from third. Chavez advanced to third on an attempted double steal and came around to score on a Jason White RBI single for a 2-1 Sox lead.
El Paso tied the game in the sixth inning on a Alberto Gonzalez sacrifice fly, while they took the lead in the seventh. Kory Drew led off with a walk, went to second on a groundout and scored on an Albenis Machado RBI single for a 3-2 Diablos advantage.
The Diablos broke the game wide open in the eighth as Espinosa added an RBI double, Stephen Douglas doubled home two more runs, while Machado hit his second homer of the season to give El Paso an 8-2 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, White led off with a walk, went to second on a Fehlandt Lentini single and went to third on an Adam De La Garza walk to load the bases. Cyle Hankerd and Lee Cruz both drew bases loaded walks to score White and Lentini, while Van Pope hit a sacrifice fly to score De La Garza and send Hankerd to third. Tim Alberts walked to load the bases, while Alex Chavez singled to score Hankerd and Cruz. Alberts scored from second on an error that sent Chavez to third. Kevin Bulter hit a sacrifice fly to score Chavez and give the Sox a 9-8 lead.
El Paso tied the game in the ninth on an Espinosa RBI single. The Sox tried to get a walkoff win in the bottom half. De La Garza led off with a single and went to second on an error. Following an intentional walk and two flyouts, Alberts had a chance to end the game, but hit into a fielder's choice to end the inning and sent the game into extra innings.
The Diablos took the lead in the 11th as they had runners on first and second with two outs when Gonzalez hit a double to score both baserunners. The Sox put two runners on with no outs in the bottom half, but the next three batters were retired without the runners moving, ending the game 11-9.
