Kansas City Monarchs News Release
LINCOLN, Neb. - Gerardo Caceres drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th inning with an RBI double and later scored on a wild pitch as the Kansas City T-Bones (24-32) earned a 7-5 victory over the Lincoln Saltdogs (26-30) at Haymarket Park on Tuesday night.
Paul Koss (1-4) threw a perfect 10th inning for Lincoln before surrendering a leadoff single to Rico Washington in the 11th. Washington was erased on a fielder's choice groundout by Ray Sadler before Sadler advanced to second on a groundout by Jim Fasano. Caceres, who entered the game in the 10th inning after the ejections of Kala Ka'aihue and Jeff Hulett, followed with the game-winning knock to give the T-Bones a 6-5 lead. He scored an insurance run later in the frame on a wild pitch by Koss.
Koss was charged with two runs on two hits in two innings in the loss.
Steven Stewart picked up the win for Kansas City with two scoreless innings of relief. The right-hander also had an at bat in the contest, striking out to end the top of the 11th inning.
Lincoln opened the scoring with a solo home run by Pat Trettel off Reid Santos in the bottom of the second. Washington later tied the game at one with an RBI double off Tim Brown in the top of the fourth. After the Saltdogs picked up two in the bottom of the frame, Aharon Eggleston made the score 3-2 with a solo blast in the top of the fifth.
Santos surrendered his final two runs in the bottom of the fifth and left after allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits over seven and two-thirds innings. The left-hander struck out eight while walking two in the contest.
Kansas City scored three times off Brown in the top of the sixth to tie the game at five, plating the first tally on an RBI single by Ka'aihue. Johnny Bowden followed with a two-run base hit.
Garrett Sherrill faced the minimum over three innings of scoreless relief for Lincoln thanks to a caught stealing in the top of the eighth. Kyle Dahman and Andy Shipman each threw two-thirds scoreless innings for the T-Bones before Stewart took over in the 10th.
The two teams now prepare for the rubber match of their three-game series on Wednesday night as Kansas City sends southpaw Kris Johnson (0-2, 4.74) to the mound opposite James Garcia (1-1, 6.30) and the Saltdogs.
