WEEK IN REVIEW
Friday, Nov. 11: Bridgeport 3, PHANTOMS 2 - Despite a strong defensive showing on Friday night at the Wachovia Spectrum, the Phantoms lost to the visiting Sound Tigers, 3-2. It was the Purple's eighth straight game without a win. The game was tied at 2-2 late in the second period when Allan Rourke scored right at the end of a Bridgeport 5-on-3 power play. Matt Koalska and Travis Brigley had the other two goals for the Sound Tigers, while Dan Cavanaugh and Pat Kavanagh converted for the Phantoms. Rejean Beauchemin received the loss with 25 saves on 28 Bridgeport opportunities.
Saturday, Nov. 12: Binghamton 5, PHANTOMS 4 (SO)
Philadelphia's winless streak reached nine games in excruciating fashion Saturday in Binghamton, where the Senators scored the game-tying goal with 32 seconds left and went on to take a 5-4 shootout win at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. With the Phantoms holding a thin 4-3 lead, and less three skaters on the ice due to penalties and a pulled goaltender, Denis Hamel tallied the equalizer for Binghamton and also scored in the shootout. Alexandre Picard, Dan Cavanaugh, Brent Kelly and Josh Gratton scored for Philadelphia, while Rejean Beauchemin absorbed the loss with 33 saves on 37 Binghamton shots.
Sunday, Nov. 13: PHANTOMS 5, Binghamton 2
The Phantoms put an end to their nine-game winless streak with a resounding 5-2 win over the Senators at the Wachovia Spectrum. Pat Kavanagh put the team on his back, registering the club's first hat trick of the season. Ben Eager and Joey Hope provided the other two goals, while Jamie Storr grabbed an assist on Kavanagh's first goal in addition to securing the win with 25 saves on 27 Binghamton shots. The Phantoms continued their special teams surge, scoring two power play goals and adding a shorthanded tally. UPCOMING OPPONENTS
Wednesday, Nov. 16: PHANTOMS at Bridgeport, 7:05 - Philadelphia starts the week with a trip to Connecticut to take on the Sound Tigers (New York Islanders), where they'll be looking for redemption for Friday's 3-2 setback. Bridgeport starts the week with a record of 7-6-1-0 for 15 points, three ahead of the Phantoms and good for third in the East Division. Tigers RW Rob Collins starts the week tied for 8th in the league in points with six goals and 12 assists for 18 points.
Friday, Nov. 18: Hershey at PHANTOMS, 7:05 and Saturday, Nov. 19: PHANTOMS at Hershey, 7:00 - The Phantoms continue the season series with Hershey with a home-and-home on Friday and Saturday. The Phantoms dropped the first meeting with the Bears back on November 4 by a 2-1 count. Hershey enters the week with a record of 8-3-1-3 for 20 points, which puts them second in the East Division. Boyd Kane, who was the captain of Philly's Calder Cup champion squad a year ago, is now in the same role with the Bears.
Sunday, Nov. 20: Norfolk at PHANTOMS, 5:05 - Philadelphia and Norfolk will meet for the third time this season on Sunday at the Wachovia Spectrum. The teams played a pair of games in October in Norfolk, with the Phantoms taking both matchups. They were the team's last two wins before Sunday's triumph over Binghamton. Jamie Storr grabbed a 1-0 shutout of the Admirals in the second of the two games. Norfolk is 6-7-0-1 for 13 points to start the week, just a point ahead of Philadelphia in the East Division standings.
All games will be available for viewing via B2 Networks on the Phantoms website,
www.phantomshockey.com CAPTAIN'S COUNTDOWN Phantoms captain John Slaney booked a four-point weekend to leave himself just
eight points away from becoming the AHL's all-time leading scorer among defensemen.
Slaney has 446 career points and is chasing Steve Kraftcheck, the current leader
at 453 career points. POWERING IT UP After suffering through a lethargic start to the campaign, the Phantoms power play
has risen to the occasion of late. Over the first 10 games of the year, the power
play was just 5-of-63 for a 7.97% rating. But over the last five games, the
Phantoms have gone 8-for-32 on the power play, an efficiency rating of 25.0%.
A FULL SLATE This week is the first of two in a row where the Phantoms will play four games in
five nights. The stretch starts Wednesday in Bridgeport and gets into full swing
with three games in three nights this weekend. After two days off, the Phantoms
will do it again, with a Wednesday night road affair followed by a three-game
weekend. Philadelphia will play a total of eight games in 12 nights during the
span. KAVANAGH NOMINATED FOR PLAYER OF THE WEEK The Phantoms have nominated Pat Kavanagh for the CCM Vector/AHL Player of the Week
Award. Kavanagh finished the three-game week by registering the Phantoms first hat
trick of the season, lifting the team to a 5-2 win over Binghamton on Sunday that
snapped the team's nine-game winless streak. Kavanagh also scored in Friday's 3-2
home loss to Bridgeport, and registered two assists in the 5-4 shootout loss to
Binghamton on Saturday. Kavanagh's scoring burst vaulted him into a three-way tie
for the team lead for scoring, with seven goals and three assists for 10 points on
the season. His seven goals lead the club outright. He completed the week with
six points in three games. Going back to November 6, Kavanagh is now on a
four-game scoring streak and has six goals in his last four games. His hat trick
was the 22nd in team history and the first since Jon Sim accomplished the feat on
Feb. 25, 2005 vs. Hershey. COACH'S CORNER ON PHANTOMSHOCKEY.COM The brand-new Coach's Corner show is now available on the Phantoms website,
