Binghamton Senators News Release
LAST WEEK: The Binghamton Senators earned four points in four games and won two consecutive games for the first time this season by defeating the Hartford Wolf Pack on Friday and the Philadelphia Phantoms on Saturday.
WEDNESDAY, NOV. 9TH @ HAMILTON (1-2 L): Forward CHARLIE STEPHENS scored the game's first goal at 3:38 of the opening period, but that was all of the scoring the Senators would do in a 2-1 loss in Hamilton. Bulldogs goalie YANN DANIS, assigned from the Montreal Canadiens to Hamilton on the day of the game, stopped 33 of 34 Binghamton shots to earn first star honors. The game-winning goal went to former B.C. Icemen tough guy PETER VANDERMEER at 9:49 of the middle period. VANDERMEER racked up 390 penalty minutes for the Icemen during the 1998-99 season. Binghamton outshot the Bulldogs 34 to 26 and BILLY THOMPSON stopped 24 of Hamilton's attempts in the losing effort. Both teams were held scoreless in two power-play chances. It was Binghamton's first game since the season opener in Philadelphia that the Sens did not allow a power-play goal.
FRIDAY, NOV. 11TH vs. HARTFORD (6-5 W): Binghamton entered the game winless in four tries against the Wolf Pack, but were able to pull out a victory when DENIS HAMEL scored a game winning power-play goal with only 39 seconds remaining in regulation. The goal capped off a four-point (2 goals, 2 assists) night for HAMEL who was outdone only by teammate BRANDON BOCHENSKI who tied a franchise record with five points (2 goals, 3 assists) in the victory. The record is now shared by BOCHENSKI and JASON SPEZZA who had five points (1 goal, 4 assists) in a 7-2 Sens win in Manchester, N.H. on Feb. 19, 2005. Things did not look good for Binghamton in the early going as Hartford opened a 3-0 lead before JEFF HEEREMA responded with a power-play score, his sixth goal of the season, at 4:02 of the second period. After a BOCHENSKI goal, GRANT POTULNY pulled Binghamton even with his first goal of the season. The teams then exchanged goals with Hartford going ahead twice, but Binghamton catching them both times, before HAMEL'S game winner. BILLY THOMPSON went the distance in net stopping 29 of 34 shots for his first win of the season after six consecutive losses. CHRIS HOLT stopped 33 of 39 shots in the loss for Hartford. BOCHENSKI'S former college teammate at the University of North Dakota, COLBY GENOWAY, had two goals in the game for the Wolf Pack.
SATURDAY, NOV 12TH vs. PHILADELPHIA (5-4 SOW): Binghamton put together two straight wins with a 5-4 shootout victory against the Philadelphia Phantoms on Saturday night. Binghamton scored first on a STEVE MARTINS power-play goal, but the teams exchanged goals until Philadelphia went ahead when BRENT KELLY scored with less than three minutes remaining in regulation. But DENIS HAMEL once again lifted the Senators with a power-play goal of his own with only 32 seconds remaining in regulation. Binghamton defenseman FILIP NOVAK earned an assist on the play and had a career-high three assists in the game. HAMEL'S goal was scored with the Senators on a six-on-three advantage thanks to a pair of minor penalties whistled late in the game on Philly and the Senators pulling their goalie in favor of an extra attacker. Binghamton killed off more than two minutes of Philadelphia power-play time in the overtime session to force a shootout. In the shootout FILIP NOVAK, JEFF HEEREMA, HAMEL and PATRICK EAVES all scored in succession and B-Sens goalie KELLY GUARD stopped two of Philly's four attempts for the victory. GUARD made 23 saves on 27 Philadelphia shots for his second win of the season.
SUNDAY, NOV. 13TH @ PHILADELPHIA (2-5 L): Former B-Sen PAT KAVANAGH had a hat trick as Philadelphia broke out of a nine-game winless streak for a 5-2 win against the visiting Binghamton Senators on Sunday evening. KAVANAGH had 31 points (14 goals, 17 assists) in 80 games for the Sens last season. DENIS HAMEL gave Binghamton an early lead with a power-play goal at 2:42 of the opening period. But Philadelphia scored the next three goals, including two straight from KAVANAGH, and the Phantoms would not relinquish their lead. CHARLIE STEPHENS had the other Binghamton goal. BILLY THOMPSON faced 42 shots and stopped 37 in the loss. JAMIE STORR defended the Phantoms' net and stopped 25 of 27 shots. Binghamton's power play converted on one of seven tries while Philadelphia scored on two of 10 chances.
