Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Rookie forward Bryan Rust netted two goals, including the game-winner, to help the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins knock off the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 4-1, on Friday at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. Rust registered his third multi-goal game of the year to take over the team goal-scoring lead with 10 this season.

With the game in a 1-1 deadlock in the closing minutes of the second period, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's power play came alive to give the team a two-goal cushion heading into the intermission. As the Penguins' fifth man-advantage was coming to a close, Conor Sheary one-timed a slapshot from the right circle that was stopped by Bridgeport goalie Kevin Poulin, but Bryan Rust swooped in to put back the rebound at 14:09.

Skating 5-on-4 a few minutes later, defenseman Derrick Pouliot stickhandled across the Sound Tigers blueline and past three defenders before lifting a shot to the top of the net. Pouliot' sixth marker of the season made the score 3-1 for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton with 22.8 seconds remaining until the break.

Protecting their 3-1 cushion in the third period, Rust beat Poulin with a wrister from the high slot with 5:21 left in regulation for his second tally of the night and 10th of the season.

The Penguins found themselves on their heels early in the contest as Bridgeport and its top-ranked power play unit were awarded three opportunities in the opening half of the first period. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was able to keep the Sound Tigers off the board before jumping ahead later in the frame.

Defenseman Barry Goers settled down a Conor Sheary pass at the point and quickly flipped a shot toward the crease that Tom Kostopoulos redirected past Poulin at 14:59 of the first for a 1-0 Wilkes-Barre/Scranton lead.

Bridgeport would tie the score, 1-1, taking advantage of a fallen Jeff Zatkoff as Kael Mouillierat deflected a chest-high pass from Colin McDonald into the open goal with 8:52 remaining in the second.

Zatkoff would keep the scoresheet clean the rest of the way, finishing with 26 saves to raise his record to 8-5-1. Poulin stopped 23-of-27 for the Sound Tigers.
