Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators picked up a big division victory with a 3-1 win over the visiting Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Andrew Hammond, who played in his first game since November 22 versus Albany, stopped 34 of 35 shots faced for his sixth win of the season.
The Phantoms scored the lone goal in the opening 20 minutes of play when Zack Stortini netted his second marker of the year less than two minutes in. Lehigh Valley's Rob Zepp stopped all 14 B-Sens scoring chances to give the visitors the 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The B-Sens evened the score 1-1 8:23 into the second period. Brad Mills, playing in his first game after finishing a 20-game suspension to begin the year, took a pass from Alex Grant and skated past the Phantoms defense beating Zepp over his blocker side. Just over three minutes later, Fredrik Claesson blasted home his second of the season with a slap shot from the right point making it 2-1 Binghamton. Hammond turned aside all 14 Phantoms' chances in the second to give the B-Sens the 2-1 lead heading into the third.
Binghamton controlled the puck for a majority of the final period. Following a bench minor call on the Phantoms for having too many skaters, the B-Sens power play made it 3-1. Carter Camper sent a shot towards the net that Zepp initially saved but the loose puck bounced around in front of the crease and Shane Prince converged. Prince took the puck and lifted it past a sprawled out Zepp for his 10th goal of the year. The B-Sens defense held the Phantoms to just eight third period shots to preserve the win.
Binghamton wraps up its weekend with a trip to Hershey tomorrow night for a 7:00p.m. puck drop versus the Bears.
