Strong Third Keeps Crunch Perfect against Bears
December 12, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hershey Bears News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Joel Vermin's power-play goal with 4:57 left in regulation broke a 1-1 tie, and the Syracuse Crunch poured on two more goals en route to a 4-1 victory over the Hershey Bears on Friday night at the Onondaga County War Memorial Arena.
It took until late in the first period for the game's first goal, but for the 18th time this season, it belonged to Hershey. On the club's second power play, Tim Kennedy sent a cross-zone pass to Stan Galiev, who one-timed a blast off the arm of Crunch goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy at 15:48. The goal was Galiev's sixth on the power play.
Philipp Grubauer made two huge saves late in the period to keep the Bears ahead, and thought he had a goal-line stuff attempt from Crunch captain Mike Angelidis covered at 4:12 of the second. No whistle came, and Angelidis knocked it in for the equalizer.
The goaltenders would make for an exciting contest until late in the third period, when Tomas Kundratek was called for a hooking minor. On the power play, Vermin got a stick on a blast by Dylan Blujus and deflected the puck past Grubauer for the eventual winner.
Dalton Smith provided the insurance, finishing off a two-on-one rush with Vlad Namestnikov just 1:16 later. Henri Ikonen hit the empty net with 34.1 seconds left in the contest to finish off the scoring.
Grubauer made 27 saves but fell to 9-7-2 on the season. Vasilevskiy won for the third time in three tries against Hershey, stopping 29 of 30 shots to improve to 8-3-3.
The Bears return home to face the Binghamton Senators for the first time this season tomorrow, December 13 with puck drop at 7:00 PM. The first 5,000 fans will receive a Dane Byers bobblehead figurine, courtesy of UGI. Individual tickets for this and all remaining home games are available at the GIANT Center box office, online at TicketMaster.com or by calling 717-508-BEAR.
