Oklahoma City Barons News Release

Andreas Athanasiou and Ray Ferraro each scored two goals for the Grand Rapids Griffins who downed the Oklahoma City Barons 5-2 Friday night at the Cox Convention Center.

In addition to netting goals in the first and third period, Athanasiou figured into the scoring of Grand Rapids' first goal of the game early in the first period by dumping the puck into the Oklahoma City zone, resulting in Barons goalie Richard Bachman skating out of the crease to clear the puck. Bachman's attempt was in vain as Mark Zengerle beat the OKC net minder to the puck and scored on the vacant net 1:41 into the game.

At 2:24 of the second period, Athanasiou's first goal gave the Griffins a 2-0 lead when the Grand Rapids forward took a pass from Mattias Backman in front of the Barons net and chipped the puck past Bachman.

Oklahoma City managed to get on the scoreboard at the 4:56 mark that followed a turnover in the Grand Rapids zone by Andy Miele that Barons forward Anton Lander corralled and in the high slot. Lander put a quick shot on net that Griffins goalie Jared Coreau knocked right to Curtis Hamilton who flipped a rebound shot into the Grand Rapids net.

The Barons tied the game at 7:47 of the second when Lander found Iiro Pakarinen with a cross-ice pass he one-timed past the blocker of Coreau.

After more than 16 minutes of scoreless play in the third period, Landon Ferraro broke the 2-2 tie when he batted the second rebound off an initial shot from the point by Nick Jensen past Bachman for what would be the game's decisive goal.

Thirty-nine seconds later, Athanasiou scored on a breakaway attempt to extend the Griffins' lead to 4-2.

Ferraro added an empty net goal at 18:11 of the third for his second goal of the game.

The two teams meet again Saturday, Dec. 13 in a 7 p.m. start at the Cox Convention Center. Those attending are encouraged to bring a gently used stuffed toy to throw onto the ice after the Barons' first goal as part of the annual Teddy Bear Toss event that benefits EMSA.
