Portland Pirates News Release
Portland, Me.- The Portland Pirates (14-11-0-0) fell to the Manchester Monarchs (16-5-1-1) by a tally of 3-1 on Friday night at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, Maine. The game saw Manchester score three unanswered goals in the second and third periods. The Monarchs were able to maintain their number one position in the Atlantic Division, while the Pirates fell to six points behind them in second place.
The Pirates drew first blood on a power play late in the first period when Dylan Reese scored at 18:43 assisted by Brendan Shinnimin and Evan Overg. As soon as the goal was scored, teddy bears and stuffed animals went flying from throughout the arena thanks to Teddy Bear Toss night presented by Maine Health. 620 bears were collected in total, and will be donated to the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital on Tuesday by Portland Pirates players.
Because the teddy bear toss came in the final two minutes of the period, the game went into an early first intermission to allow for cleanup. Not long into the second period, Manchester answered with their first goal of the night on a power play at 8:14, scored by Nick Shore and assisted by Colin Miller and Derek Forbort. The rest of the second frame played out with the score tied at 1.
Manchester netted their go-ahead goal at 7:28 in the third when Josh Gratton found the back of the net with help from Miller and Ryan Horvat. Zach O'Brien scored the insurance goal for the Monarchs at 14:31, assisted by Gratton and Horvat.
Mike McKenna (9-8-0) manned the net for the Pirates, blocking 22 out of 25 shots faced. Jean-Francois Berube (12-4-2) recorded the win for Manchester, stopping 24 of 25 Pirates shots.
The Pirates and Monarchs are back in action for another VIP Cup Presented by VIP Tires and Service matchup on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at the Cross Insurance Arena. For tickets and more information, call 207-PIRATES.
