Payer Named Rampage Man of Year
April 5, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
San Antonio Rampage News Release
SAN ANTONIO â Apr. 5, 2005 â The San Antonio Rampage are proud to announce that Serge Payer (pie-YAY) has been named the Rampage's winner of the American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the San Antonio community and charitable organizations during the 2004-05 season.
Payer has poised himself with class both on and off the ice. Despite being set back with a hip injury that has kept him off the ice for most of the season, Payer has demonstrated integrity and compassion to younger players by showing his dedication to rehabilitating his injury and encouraging his teammates before every game. He makes it a point to show support to his teammates even if he can't be on the ice playing with them.
Outside the rink, Serge is just as committed to the Rampage organization as he is to his teammates. Serge is willing to help out anyway he can, from participating in the organization's grassroots hockey program to commercial shoots to signing autographs after a game. His positive attitude and support helps to encourage the rest of the team to offer their time to help the organization. While the team was on the road, he committed his time to helping out in the community. Whether it was reading to kids at schools and shopping malls, helping high school students with their interview skills, handing out awards to young athletes or delivering presents to children that are sick in the hospital, he brought his positive attitude and spirit to all those he visited.
In recognition of his efforts, Payer will be presented with an etched crystal trophy during an on-ice presentation prior to an upcoming Rampage home game.
Payer is now one of 28 finalists for the 2004-05 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia.
