Providence Bruins News Release

The Providence Bruins are proud to announce that left wing Jay Henderson has been named the team's winner of the American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Providence community and charitable organizations during the 2004-05 season.

Henderson, who earlier this season became the Bruins' franchise career leader in games played, has continued his tradition of being a visible and consistent presence in the community, making regular visits to the Hasbro Children's Hospital, schools and charity fund-raising events. He has also maintained an active presence in speaking to children with diabetes. Henderson, a 26-year-old native of Edmonton, Alberta, was diagnosed with diabetes himself at 11 years of age.

The Bruins' co-captain, Henderson organized collections from the team to send calling cards to troops stationed overseas during the holiday season. He also led the team on a toy-shopping spree for underprivileged children during the holidays.

This nomination is the second of Henderson's career. He was the Bruins' winner in 2001-02. He was also the team's Community Service Award winner in 1999-2000 and 2001-02.

Henderson was originally selected by the Boston Bruins with their 12th pick (9th round), 246th overall, in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. He has 52-67-119 totals and 856 PIM in 272 career games with Providence. Henderson played last season with the Milwaukee Admirals, becoming the fourth player in AHL history to win the Calder Cup with three different teams. He also won the Calder Cup with Providence in 1998-99 and with the Houston Aeros in 2002-03. In 33 career NHL games with the Boston Bruins, Henderson has 1-3-4 totals and 37 PIM.

In recognition of his efforts, Henderson will be presented with an etched crystal trophy during an on-ice presentation prior to an upcoming Bruins home game.

Henderson is now one of 28 finalists for the 2004-05 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia.
