Edmonton Road Runners News Release

The Edmonton Road Runners are proud to announce Rocky Thompson has been selected as the Road Runners' nominee for the American Specialty/AHL Man-of-the-Year Award for his outstanding contributions to the Edmonton community and charitable organizations during the 2004-05 season.

Road Runners’ President Stew MacDonald says, “Rocky Thompson is an excellent example of a professional hockey player who truly realizes the value of community involvement. A tireless worker on ice, Rocky is always quick to agree to a promotional activity, community event, or fundraiser, and always puts his best foot forward representing the team, and the American Hockey League.”

Since relocating to Edmonton with the Road Runners last summer, Thompson has been involved in over 50 community events, including being named the Honourary Chairman for the Edmonton Christmas Bureau. The Whitecourt, Alberta native appeared at numerous minor hockey practices and elementary schools throughout the Edmonton community, speaking on several topics, emphasizing the value of teamwork and goal setting.

In recognition of his efforts, Thompson will be presented with an etched crystal trophy during the Molson Road Runners Player Awards night on Tuesday, April 12 when the Road Runners face-off against the Manitoba Moose.

Thompson is now one of 28 finalists for the 2004-05 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall American Specialty/AHL Man-of-the-Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia.
