Chicago Wolves left wing Karl Stewart has been named the team's 2004-05 American Specialty/American Hockey League Man of the Year. One player from each AHL team has been recognized for his outstanding commitments to his local community and charitable organizations during the 2004-05 season.

The 21-year-old forward is now a finalist for the AHL's 2004-05 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award honoring the overall American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year. One player will be selected from the 28 individual team award winners to be honored during the 2005 Calder Cup Finals.

The Wolves have had a player receive league-wide honors for community service four times in its 11-year history, including former Wolves defenseman Kurtis Foster, who earned the award last season.

Stewart served as a player spokesman for the Wolves' most successful education program, ³Read to Succeed,² sponsored by Fisher Nuts, which has reached nearly 350,000 children in 10 seasons. He has visited more than 40 libraries during the past two years to speak about the role that education plays in his life as a professional athlete and to encourage children to spend more time in libraries; to read recreationally; and to understand the importance of education.

The Aurora, Ontario, native also initiated a program with the Lutheran General Hospital Teen Life Ward so he could visit younger patients on a monthly basis. Stewart spent time with the patients and their families while handing out goody bags and signing autographs. In addition, he invited the patients and their families to be his guests at Wolves home games when they were well enough to attend.

Throughout the season, Stewart has also volunteered his time to other team charity efforts including the Wolves' ³Toys for Tots² drive, sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps, and the annual players' wives' fundraiser, which raised money for the Y-Me Breast Cancer Organization and charities associated with former Wolves center Dan Snyder.

The award is named after the late Yanick Dupre, who passed away in August 1997 at the age of 24, following a 16-month battle with leukemia. Dupre played four seasons with the Hershey Bears (1992-1996), registering 169 points (70G, 99A) in 207 games. He also played in 35 National Hockey League games with the Philadelphia Flyers.
