North Charleston, S.C. - Forwards Chad Painchaud and Chris Langkow each scored a goal and two assists to guide the South Carolina Stingrays (9-0-1-1) over the Evansville IceMen (6-1-0-0) 6-5 in the shootout at the North Charleston Coliseum Saturday night. With the win, the Stingrays' season-opening unbeaten streak extends to 11 contests.
The Stingrays lit the lamp three times in the first period and took a 3-0 lead into the first intermission behind goals from forwards Langkow, Patrick Gaul and Andrew Cherniwchan. Langkow opened the scoring 6:21 into the contest knocking in a rebound past the right leg of IceMen goaltender Mike Clemente (SOL, 36 saves on 41 shots). Painchaud and defenseman Luka Vidmar earned assists. Gaul made it a two-goal lead at 14:30 off a rebound from forwards Marc Hagel and Peter Boyd. With defenseman Scooter Vaughn in the penalty box, Cherniwchan capitalized shorthanded at 16:38 completing a 2-on-1 rush with Langkow and lifting a drive over the glove of Clemente.
Painchaud buried his fifth goal of the season to give the Stingrays a 4-0 advantage at 5:43 of the middle frame taking a pass from Hagel at the right-wing circle and slipping it under the blocker of Clemente. The IceMen jumped on the board moments later when rookie Mike Seidel batted in a rolling puck over the right pad of Stingrays netminder Adam Morrison (W, 37 saves on 42 shots) at 8:11. IceMen team captain Josh Beaulieu added his second goal of the season on the power play at 14:17 to make it 4-2.
The IceMen pulled the game within one at 6:08 of the third period with forward Jacob Johnson's first professional goal. Forward Jordan Owens put the Stingrays back up by two with a power-play marker at 13:55 from Painchaud and Price. Less than a minute later, the IceMen strike off the stick of forward Jeremy Langlois at 14:51 and then tie the contest with 20 seconds to play thanks to forward Matt Lowry's fifth goal of the season. Both teams fired four shots in overtime, but skated away empty handed. In the shootout, Painchaud and Cherniwchan found the back of the net and Morrison made four saves to seal the victory. The Stingrays went 1-for-5 on the power play while the IceMen finished 1-for-4.
