Two Opposite Weeks

The Wheeling Nailers and Reading Royals enter Saturday night's contest having taken drastically different paths during the past week. The Nailers have already played in a pair of games, picking up one point in a 3-2 shootout loss to Kalamazoo on Wednesday, before posting a powerful 6-2 victory in Fort Wayne on Friday, giving them points in three straight games. Meanwhile, the Royals have been off since last Saturday, when they completed a weekend sweep of the Atlantic Division, by defeating the Elmira Jackals, 5-2. The two sides will meet up again on Sunday at Santander Arena.

Offense Has Arrived

When the Nailers and Royals clashed last Friday at WesBanco Arena, both teams were struggling to find their touch offensively, as Wheeling had scored just five goals in three games, while Reading had accumulated only ten goals in five games. Since then, the numbers have shot up, thanks to two excellent performances for both sides. The Nailers lit the lamp five times against Greenville last Saturday, then ripped six into the back of the net on Friday against Fort Wayne. The Royals put their offensive slump to bed with six goals in Wheeling last Friday, following that up with five at home against Elmira.

Rowney Tricks His Way to Scoring Lead

Despite only playing in the 11th game of his professional career, forward Carter Rowney gave himself a lasting memory on Friday night in Fort Wayne. Midway through the second period, Rowney broke a 2-2 tie, scoring twice in a span of 15 seconds, lifting the Nailers to a 4-2 advantage. Then, with less than four minutes to go in the third, Carter was at it again, finishing off his first career hat trick, as Wheeling took down Fort Wayne, 6-2. The hat trick was the Nailers' first since Paul Crowder's on January 5th against Trenton, and it catapults Rowney into the team lead in both goals (5) and points (8) on the season.

Journey Through Atlantic

After playing a different opponent in each of their first seven contests of the season, the Nailers will see all familiar foes, as the month of November continues through the midway mark. In fact, Wheeling will see only divisional clubs for the next six games, starting with a home-and-home series against Reading on Saturday and Sunday. The Nailers will then play three straight games against Elmira, before finishing with one more battle against the Royals. At that point, Wheeling will have played eight of its 30 in-division games. Last season, the Nailers posted a 16-13-1-3 record within their division, which consisted of Elmira, Reading, and Trenton. Currently, Wheeling, Elmira, and Reading are separated by just two points.

Looking for a Different Result

Saturday night serves as the second of 15 head-to-head meetings between Wheeling and Reading this season, after the Royals defeated the Nailers 6-2 last Friday at WesBanco Arena. Forward Dustin Gazley had three assists for Reading, while forwards Louie Caporusso, Stanislav Galiev, and TJ Syner all had one goal and one assist. Syner has since gotten the call to the AHL's Hershey Bears, after posting seven points in six contests. Jack MacLellan and Carter Rowney scored the two goals for Wheeling. Eric Hartzell gets the call in goal against the Royals for the second week in a row, looking for his first pro win.
