Alaska Aces News Release
BOISE, Idaho - Goaltender Mark Guggenberger made 26 saves while Peter Sivak, Brendan Connolly and Nick Mazzolini each picked up a pair of points to help the Alaska Aces rally past the Idaho Steelheads in a 5-2 victory before 4,089 fans at CenturyLink Arena on Friday.
The Aces, who fell several minutes shy of the ECHL shutout streak, climbed out of a 2-0 hole with five unanswered goals, including three in a span of 6:31 in the first period.
Guggenberger, inserted into the lineup following a trade that sent original starter Laurent Brossoit from the Calgary Flames to the Edmonton Oilers, improved to 4-0 and was victimized twice in the opening ten minutes, beginning on Tyler Gron's breakaway at 7:46 for the game's first goal.
The Aces then turned the puck away in their own zone and Brock Montgomery finished a relay from Taylor Vause in the slot for a 2-0 lead at 10:02. From that point, the Aces went right to work with seizing momentum.
On the next shift, Tim Coffman finished a wrist shot from the right circle past Chris Carrozzi for a 2-1 deficit just 28 seconds after Montgomery's goal. The top line was then dispatched for the next shift and Peter Sivak tied the game just 32 seconds later on a feed by Nick Mazzolini at the goal mouth for his sixth marker of the season.
Brendan Connolly then wired a one timer to the top corner, from the right circle courtesy Brad Richard's feed for a power play goal and 3-2 lead with 2:59 left in the period.
It took just 1:46 into the second period for Jordan Kremyr to put the Aces ahead 4-2 off a snap shot from the right circle, finishing a feed by Eli Zuck while on the rush.
Guggenberger made a key save on Gaelan Patterson to preserve the two goal lead with five minutes left in regulation. Evan Trupp put the Steelheads away with a one-timer from the slot, set up by one-touch feeds from Sivak and Mazzolini with 3:20 left for a 5-2 cushion.
Carrozzi, making his Steelheads debut, took the loss on 14 saves.
