Ontario Reign News Release
WEST VALLEY CITY, UT - The Ontario Reign (5-0-1-2), back-to-back Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets, held on to their third period lead for a 2-1 win over the Utah Grizzlies (1-4-1-1) Friday night at Maverik Center.
Ontario got on the board first with their first shot on goal. Matt White intercepted the puck and moved it up to Derek Couture who found Dan DaSilva who scored with a backhand at 5:26. The rest of the period remained scoreless with the Grizzlies outshooting the Reign 14-3 but none of their shots could find the back of the net.
Utah evened the score 1-1 at the 15:14 mark of the second period when Danick Paquette found a gap between Mathias Niederberger's skate and the right post. The Reign turned the tables with shots on goal outshooting the Grizzlies 13-10 in the second frame. The Reign wrapped the puck around the Grizzlies' net and tried to put it past Igor Bobkov. Brett Beebe and Zach O'Brien took a couple shots on him before White took control of the loose biscuit and pushed it past the Grizzlies goalie at the 3:44 mark of the final frame. A big hit on DaSilva resulted in a fight and more pushing and shoving, which after a couple minutes of sorting, out gave the Reign a power play and saw a misconduct dealt to each team. The rest of the regulation remained scoreless and left the Reign ahead by one goal at the sound of the horn.
Niederberger earned his second regulation win stopping 25 of 26 shots; Bobkov took the loss with 24 saves on 26 shots.
