Alaska Aces News Release
BOISE, Idaho - Evan Trupp collected two goals but the Idaho Steelheads used two late third period goals to hold off the Alaska Aces, 4-2, before 4,485 fans at CenturyLink Arena on Saturday.
The Aces salvaged two wins in three games at Boise but had their nine game win streak come to an end, bidding for their longest winning streak since the 2005-06 season. Mark Guggenberger, named starter shortly before game time with Olivier Roy arriving into town earlier in the day, made 20 saves and is 4-1 this season.
Alaska spotted Idaho a 2-0 lead through the first 15 minutes, beginning with Anthony Nigro's sixth goal on a wrist shot from the left circle. Tyler Gron then buried Tommy Grant's centering pass off the rush with 5:24 left in the second period, putting the Aces into the same hole from the previous night.
Their comeback attempt began in the opening minute of the second period after Brett Robinson earned a goaltender interference penalty for running Guggenberger at the end of the first period. Trupp stashed a power play goal from the left circle with 56 seconds elapsed on a set up by Nick Mazzolini.
The Aces then missed their captain for the late portion of the game after Robinson delivered a two-hand slash to Mazzolini during an Aces power play late in the second period. Idaho also threatened with a five-on-three that the Aces escaped after a key shot block by Jordan Kremyr, after losing his stick, and a disallowed goal coming after Nigro batted the puck into the net with a high stick.
David deKastrozza buried a snap shot off the rush for a key insurance goal and 3-1 lead with 7:07 left in regulation. But, the Aces drew to within a goal when Trupp re-directed B.J. Crum's point shot past Pat Nagle's glove with 3:01 left.
Just 14 seconds later, Idaho earned another insurance goal at 4-2 when Justin Mercier snuck a wrist shot through Guggenberger's armpit after he appeared to close the left post with his blocker.
Nagle earned the win with 26 saves.
