Albany Devils News Release

ALBANY, NY - The addition of Stephen Gionta, Olivier Magnan and Anssi Salmela couldn't help the Albany Devils, who were overcome by the Binghamton Senators, 5-0, Friday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. Albany is now 11-15-0-0 on the year, while Binghamton improves to 11-12-2-1.

The Devils' roster increased to 30 players as Gionta and Magnan were assigned by New Jersey to Albany Friday. Anssi Salmela was assigned to the AHL Devils for a conditioning stint Thursday.

Albany, which has been struck by the injury bug, dressed seven defensemen. Six were used on the blue line, while Tyler Eckford was moved up to the offensive side of the puck to start the night. He supplied the Devils' best offensive opportunity deep in the second period. A centering pass, while B-Sens goaltender Barry Brust was out of position, gave Eckford a gapping net. As the goal light prematurely turned on, Brust extended his stick to knock the shot out of midair and deny the effort.

Brust finished the game with 25 saves to earn his ninth victory and third shutout of the season.

The Senators were able to grab a 3-0 lead through the first 27 minutes of hockey. Cory Locke struck first with a bit of controversy. His wrister found iron while on the power play at 14:28 of the first. The Devils thought the puck hit the right post, but the officials ruled the shot struck the back bar inside the net.

Moments later, Colin Greening increased the B-Sens' lead when he chipped in a rebound off a Jim O'Brien shot at 17:54.

A seeing-eye shot by Mike Hoffman found its way through from the left point at 6:08. The goal was his team's second power-play goal of the game.

In the second half of the game, Zack Smith made it 4-0 at 12:58 of the second and Erick Condra made it 5-0 and finished the scoring at 11:50 of the third.

Jeff Frazee made his sixth straight appearance and stopped 37 of 42 shots.

Albany returns to the Times Union Center on Saturday, Dec. 11 for a 7 p.m. outing against Worcester. The team will be hosting a "Teddy Bear Toss". Fans are encouraged to bring a new or slightly used stuffed animal to the game. During the second intermission an announcement will be made and fans can throw the stuffed animals onto the ice. They will be collected and distributed to the Albany Boys and Girls' Club, Albany Police Athletic League (P.A.L.), the American Red Cross and the Ronald McDonald House.

Tickets for the 7 p.m. contest can be purchased at the Times Union Center box office or at any Ticketmaster outlet. Fans can also buy tickets via charge-by-phone at 1-800-745-3000 or by visiting Ticketmaster.com.
