Hershey Bears News Release

Two of the best offensive teams in the AHL met Friday in Charlotte, but it would be goaltending that would take center stage, as HERSHEY won 2-1 over the Checkers in a shootout to assume sole possession of third place in the East Division standings.

Andrew Gordon opened the scoring Friday night, picking up his 16th of the season just 65 seconds into the first period. The shot hopped past Charlotte goaltender Justin Pogge, with Brian Willsie picking up the lone assist. HERSHEY led 1-0 until the 14:37 mark when Jerome Samson scored from Chris Terry.

It would be a long time before another goal was scored, and it took a shootout win for HERSHEY to claim the two points at stake. Despite the BEARS finishing the game with 50 shots on goal, neither team would score in the second period, third period or overtime period, and the game would move to the skills competition. Lawrence Nycholat and Brian Willsie would score against Pogge in the shootout, and Braden Holtby would do the rest. Holtby stopped all four shots he faced to win his seventh game of the season. Pogge would suffer the hard luck loss, making 48 saves.

BEARS Radio Network Three Stars of the game:

1. Justin Pogge (48 saves in a losing effort)

2. Andrew Gordon (Scored HERSHEY'S lone goal in regulation)

3. Jerome Samson (Charlotte's only goal in regulation)

Notes: The BEARS will have a rare Saturday off on the road before completing a two-game set in Charlotte Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. Washington announced Friday afternoon that defenseman Brian Fahey has been recalled to the Capitals. HERSHEY announced late Friday afternoon that left wing Grant McNeill has been recalled from South Carolina (ECHL). Kyle Greentree missed Friday's game due to injury. Greentree is listed as day-to-day with a lower body injury. The American Hockey League announced Friday that Steve Pinizzotto was suspended for Friday's game for his actions in the third period Wednesday in Albany against the Devils. Pinizzotto is eligible to play Sunday against the Checkers. Sunday's game in North Carolina will be the fourth and final meeting between the two teams in 2010-11 at Time Warner Cable Arena. Charlotte still has three games at Giant Center, including Sunday, December 19 at 5:00 p.m. Tickets for next weekend's home games against the Checkers and the Providence Bruins are on sale now at the Giant Center box office, or by calling (717) 534-3911.
