Pirates Power Past Bruins

PROVIDENCE, RI - Maxime Legault scored twice to lead the Portland Pirates to a 5-1 win over the Providence Bruins in an American Hockey League game played tonight in front of 6,255 at the Dunkin Donut Center.

Jacob Lagace added a goal and an assist to the Pirates attack while Drew Schiestel and Matt Ellis rounded out the scoring. The win ended a Pirates three-game winless streak and moved them to 15-8-1-1 on the season.

Jordan Lavallee-Smotherman netted the lone goal for Providence, now 10-11-2-1 on the year.

LaVallee-Smotherman netted the only goal of the opening period (5:27 into the game) as he connected shortly after the Pirates killed off a two-man disadvantage giving the Bruins a 1-0 lead after one. The Pirates stormed back in the second. Legault started the uprising three minutes into the period to tie the game at one. Four-and-a-half minutes later Lagace connected on a breakaway to give the Pirates their first lead of the game, up 2-1. Schiestel completed the scoring in the second to give Portland a 3-1 lead heading into the third. Ellis and Legault, with his second of the game, scored in a span of 13 seconds in the third to complete the scoring.

The Pirates out shot the Bruins 35-32 in the game as Jhonas Enroth posted the victory.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were all from the Pirates. Legault was the first, Lagace the second and T.J. Brennan the third.

The Pirates continue a stretch of four straight games on the road tomorrow (Saturday) night when they travel to Adirondack to take on the Phantoms in a 7 p.m. start. The weekend trip concludes Sunday with a 3 p.m. game against the Manchester Monarchs. Both games can be heard live on News Talk 95.5 WLOB and on-line at portlandpirates.com beginning with the pre-game show 15 minutes prior to the opening face-off.

The Pirates return home next Saturday (December 18) at 7 p.m. to take on the Monarchs. It's another Bud Light Hockey Night in Portland as Five County Credit Union will be providing a free Pirates T-shirt to the first 2,500 fans.
