Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, Va. - Alex Berry had a goal and two assists and Dustin Tokarski made 33 saves as the Norfolk Admirals (16-6-4-1) defeated the East Division-leading Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (21-5-0-0), 4-2, on Friday night at Norfolk Scope Arena. The Admirals and Penguins have a rematch tomorrow night in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, at 7:05 p.m.
Mike Angelidis, Troy Milam and Stefano Giliati also scored for Norfolk, who handed Wilkes-Barre/Scranton just their second loss in 13 road games this season.
Berry opened scoring with a power play goal only 2:18 into the contest. Mike Vernace took a shot from the right point that Berry deflected past Penguins netminder John Curry for his eighth goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.
The Penguins tied the game with a power play goal of their own less than three minutes later. Nick Johnson found a loose puck out of a goalmouth scramble and lifted a backhand shot into the net at 5:13.
Angelidis put Norfolk ahead for good just over three minutes later with a shot from the left half wall. Curry, who was screened by Berry, slowed - but did not stop - the puck, as it trickled over the goal line past his left leg at 8:24 for Angelidis' ninth goal of the season.
The Admirals doubled their lead 7:56 into the second stanza on Milam's fourth tally of the season. Angelidis sent a pass from the right half wall to Milam in the high slot. Milam sent a one-timer through a screen and into the net for a 3-1 Norfolk lead.
Johnson's second power play goal of the game just over a minute later drew the Penguins back to within a goal of the Admirals. Corey Potter sent a shot from the left point that was deflected on goal by Tim Wallace. The rebound kicked out to Johnson in the left circle, and he sent the puck past Tokarski's right leg at 9:05.
Norfolk added an insurance tally 6:21 into the final frame. Stefano Giliati sent the puck from the neutral zone to Chris Durno as he entered the attacking zone at the high slot. Durno returned the puck to Giliati in the left circle, and Giliati deked to his backhand as he cut across the goalmouth and sent a shot past the left leg of Curry for his fourth goal of the season.
The Penguins out-shot Norfolk 13-5 in the final frame. However, Tokarski did not allow a goal in the frame to ensure the Admirals victory.
Dustin Tokarski (35 shots, 33 saves) earned the victory. John Curry (31 shots, 27 saves) took the loss.
Norfolk was 1-4 on the power play. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was 2-5.
