Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Winnipeg, MB - The Edmonton Oil Kings (19-6-2-1) surrendered three late goals in the third period as they dropped a 5-2 decision to the Winnipeg ICE (23-3-1-0) at the Wayne Fleming Arena on Saturday night.

After putting up 42 shots last night, the Oil Kings came out firing once again blasting four shots on Winnipeg goaltender Gage Alexander in the opening 90 seconds but could not solve the Anaheim prospect, at least not early.

Midway through the first period, Jakub Demek and Josh Williams found themselves on a two-on-one rush with Demek showing great patience to setup Williams for a backdoor deflection to give the Oil Kings the game's opening goal at 9:56.

The ICE were able to tie the game late in the first period after Conor Geekie was able to make a perfect re-direct on a point-shot from Max Streule with just 2:33 left on the clock.

The second period followed a similar pattern as the first with the Oil Kings dominating the play for the bulk of it to take a lead, only to have the ICE find a late equalizer.

At 4:16 of the second period, Chase Friedt-Mohr collected his first goal as an Oil King after Cole Miller found him with a pass in the right-wing circle, and loaded up and lasered a wrist shot off the post and in.

The Oil Kings had three cracks on the power play in the middle stanza but could not find an insurance marker and with 2:04 left in the period, Benjamin Zloty evened the score as he weaved his way into the slot and elevated a backhand into the Edmonton net.

In the third period, the road weary Oil Kings simply ran out of gas, getting outshot 16-4 in the final 20 minutes and despite the heroics of rookie netminder Kolby Hay, the ICE were finally able to pull ahead with just under four minutes left in regulation after Matthew Savoie tipped in a Zloty point-shot.

Mikey Milne would make it a 4-2 lead shortly after and Savoie scored his second of the period on a breakaway in the final minute to give the home-side the three-goal victory.

Next up, the Oil Kings make their way south down the QEII to the Saddledome to battle the Calgary Hitmen on Wednesday night at 7:00 PM.
