Wheat Kings Knock off Oil Kings
December 11, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB - The Brandon Wheat Kings needed just a ten-second span in the third period to put themselves ahead of the Edmonton Oil Kings for good in a 3-2 win on Friday night.
Marcus Kallionkieli and Brett Hyland scored just ten seconds apart in a four on four situation. Hyland's 6th of the year would stand up as the game winner.
Brandon was outshot 19-9 in the first period, but rattled off 26 shots in the final forty minutes to flip the script and knock off the second place team in the Eastern Conference.
"It feels real to come back in this one and pick up the win here against Edmonton," said defenseman Logen Hammett. "We were outshot and scrambling a bit tonight but I think we turned it on in the third and potted a couple then grinded out the win. There was too much east - west play tonight and not enough pucks deep, its something we have to fix here."
Ethan Kruger was excellent for the Wheat Kings, stopping 40 shots for the win, while Kolby Hay stopped 32 in the Edmonton goal.
"It was a tough game, we did that to ourselves," said Head Coach Don MacGillivray. "We had some chances in the first with the three goal-posts but we spent so much time turning pucks over and allowing Edmonton to play with a shorter rink...it was too much time in our own end. Luckily, we got out of it in decent shape and found a way to win."
The Wheat Kings finished the night 0/3 on the powerplay, but gave up a pair of goals on the penalty kill. Edmonton's two powerplay markers came from Jalen Luypen and Dawson Seitz.
The win brings Brandon back to .500 on the season, with a record of 13-13-0-1 heading into tomorrow night's Teddy Bear Clash with the Regina Pats!
Doors open at 6:00, puck drop is scheduled for 7:00!
