Slow Start Plagues Pats in Loss to Brandon

Brandon, Man. - The Brandon Wheat Kings scored three goals in the first nine minutes of Saturday's game en route to a narrow 4-3 win over the Regina Pats.

Regina recovered well after their slow start and battled back, with Logan Nijhoff making it 3-1 before the first intermission, followed by Braxton Whitehead and Cole Dubinsky each scoring to make it a 4-3 game after 40 minutes. The Pats fired 15 shots on goal in the third period, but could not find the equalizer.

Drew Sim came in relief for Matthew Kieper and had his best appearance of the season, stopping 23 of 24 shots.

The Wheat Kings got goals from four different players, including the Teddy Bear Toss goal just 20 seconds in from Brett Hyland. Nolan Ritchie, Chad Nychuk and Nate Danielson had the other Brandon goals.

The Pats next contest is Friday, December 17 at home against the Moose Jaw Warriors in the Pats Happy Holidays game.

1st Period

BDN 1-0 at 0:20 - Brett Hyland (7), assisted by Landon Roberts and Zakhar Polshakov// Just 20 seconds in, Hyland came down the right wing on a 2-on-1 and beat Kieper to the glove side.

BDN 2-0 at 5:34 - Nolan Ritchie (15), assisted by Marcus Kallionkieli and Zakhar Polshakov // Kallionkieli made a great backdoor pass from the goal line on his backhand to Ritchie on the power play, who buried to double the lead.

BDN 3-0 at 8:41 - Chad Nychuk (7), assisted by Mason Ward and Nolan Ritchie // Nychuk threw a puck towards the net that went off Ryker Evans and into the Pats net.

REG 1-3 at 19:45 - Logan Nijhoff (9), assisted by Ryker Evans (22) and Tanner Howe (8) // After Evans point shot left a rebound, Nijhoff was right there in front to put it home.

2nd Period

BDN 4-1 at 2:48 - Nate Danielson (7), assisted by Rylen Roersma andJacob Hoffrogge // Danielson come down the right wing and ripped a snap shot just inside the far side post.

REG 2-4 at 3:03 -Braxton Whitehead (3), assisted by Adam McNutt (4) and Layton Feist (6) // McNutt's shot from the right point was tipped in by Whitehead.

REG 3-4 at 13:08 - Cole Dubinsky (8), assisted by Stanislav Svozil (17) and Ryker Evans (23)// Svozil's one-timer

3rd Period

No goals.

GOALTENDING BATTLE

Regina: Matthew Kieper was pulled after allowing three goals on four shots. Drew Sim stood tall with 23 saves on 24 shots.

Brandon: Carson Bjranason made 28 saves on 31 shots.

THEY SAID IT

Head Coach John Paddock: "We didn't quit. You're not supposed to quit and we chipped away. It's big hole and it's hard to come back from. We got better as the game went on. I'm not sure why we could have such a poor start and make such bad decisions, but we did...Clearly, with Connor not here, we need to have more scoring by committee and we have the last three games. Have we been able to find enough goals to win? Three doesn't get you a win all the time, but it's close and if we had just been ready to start the game, we could have got a point out of here."
